Hi all
so I’ve a 2 year old who’s a “extremely picky eater” she has been this way since 10 months old with brief periods of better eating.
she currently only eating potato waffles , pasta Bolognese , strawberries and custard/yougart.
other foods like ready break and weetabix she’ll have sometimes one / two spoons before she’ll refuse.
she will point blank refuse most meals without even trying. She’s scream and cry and throw her head around and throw everything to the ground.
there is no way she will eat without distraction iPad/ colouring.and has to be spoon fed (even though she can use a fork to eat her strawberry’s )
she is otherwise developing well, can talk in sentences ect.
is this just standard picky eating of a toddler?

You might like to have a look at this; she tells you how to count the foods your child will eat to see if it's a problem or not.

One of ours was like that.

Almost exclusively milk, chips, cheese, and olives, with the odd banana and bit of rice.

Never stressed her about it, ate together, presented new foods etc.

At 3 (I think, maybe 4?) she walked in, picked an apple out of the fruit bowl and started eating it!

She still likes plain foods but quite a wide range now.

I'm a big believer in they know what they need. I may have been more worried if she wasn't getting calcium...

Our other two eat anything.

my first thought is that she is just a toddler. What you wrote doesn’t stand out to me. It’s just a snapshot though so who knows.

we always struggled to keep DD’s weight up. She would absolutely go hungry rather than eat a non safe food. She would have epic gagging if she tried to eat a non-safe food when we were following the “no thank you bite” protocol initially recommended by our doctor.

That restricted, I'd say definitely a candidate for ARFID.

Our DD, who is diagnosed would absolutely rather starve than eat a food that wasn’t considered safe. The term “they’ll eat when they’re hungry” simply doesn’t apply to DC with ARFID.

Having looked into arfid a bit more I think I may have it myself.
when I was a child the dr would refer me to as having anorexia which i definitely didn’t I was just never hungry and I was put on these special shakes to help with nutrition, but even now if you were to put a plate of lasagna or something like that infront of me and I was starving I wouldn’t be able to eat it I would be sick , I cannot bear the smell of ketchup on someone else plate it will stop me eating .. I always thought I was just picky and possibly my daughter was also just picky but maybe not

Went to the hv yesterday she’s not concerned but said she’d refer her to a dietitian… she thinks it’s not a phase / learned behaviour but it’s been going on a year now :(
total refusal to breakfast this morning no yogart even just screamed.
im at my wits end

I can relate to this. I have a 3 yr old boy who will point blank refuse food, throw it at me and just cry or scream.
He has a small range of things that he will eat (Weetabix, sandwich-only with cheese spread or peanut butter in, crackers, cheese wotsits, oaty bars- kids ones for 12+ months old)
He will have banana in his Weetabix but won't ry anything else at all. I keep offering different things but it's always a no.
I've been reading up on ARFID and have a phone consultation with the GP tomorrow to see if we can get referred to paediatrician.

I try not to get stressed about it but it's wearing me down, an endless battle so I can sympathise with how you are feeling x

all three year olds are odd with food , just keep presenting foods on a side plate and normal for her foods on the plate. My children both went through this phase and eat everything now. We had our beige food years
