Do I need my ex’s permission, holiday?

i have a 10 year old son with an abusive and violent man I left 9 and a half years ago, I haven’t heard a peep from him since the start of January and he hasn’t seen our son since Christmas Day, didn’t call on his birthday, hasn’t attempted to see him, we live in the same small town.

in April I received more information from his now ex girlfriend warning me that he is violent and to keep my son away, I told her I was sorry for what had happened to her but that I was aware as the same has happened to me.

my son would love to go abroad he talks about it all the time, do I have to ask his permission before booking a holiday? What if he says no? I don’t want to contact him personally as I’m worried it will open the flood gates for him to start asking for contact and threatening court action which is his usual pattern. What can I do?

my son has his last name and he is on the birth certificate

He sounds nice!!
For your own safety don’t go near him. Book your holiday and go on. I have travelled lots with kids on my own and only ever got a few questions in Germany with my 11 year old. We do have the same surname.
