When do toddlers start to play on their own?

My 13 mo always been clingy, and it's tricky to get anything done because he wants to be held quite a lot. I do tell him to wait and etc, but I'm just waiting for the time he can play on his own. I guess every child is different and I really want to be responsive. If you had a velcro/clingy baby, when did they start to be more independent? He seems to be doing Oki in a nursery. Any tips?

I would say from about aged 2 onwards for my Velcro child!

Do you ever say ‘mummy is just getting a glass of water , why didn’t you play here for a moment and I’ll be right back‘ or do you always just stay and play or take them everywhere with you ? I still think 13 months is pretty little but essentially they never will play on their own if you always play with them!

Yeah, I try to. Sometimes I just have to, he just cries quite often when I put him down or even if I just sit with him on the sofa he really wants to be held. Some days it's better and I'm thinking maybe we are finally past that stage.
