My teenage daughter is insisting that it is unfair that she has a single bed.

My teen boys both have single beds. I wouldn’t be able to get double beds in their rooms so short of moving house they’ll have to deal with it.

Unless she plans to live alone all her life the biggest "share" of a bed she will have is the same size as a single. My children know this. We have a superking which is 2 single beds. My 6ft sons both have singles and when at uni had either single beds or small doubles which are 120cm wide. Both returned to their singles at home with no issue. If their beds were any bigger there wouldn't be a lot of room in their rooms.

We moved house so we would have three double rooms instead of the two and a single we had. Both my children have double beds. Their rooms are good sized doubles though and they still have plenty of room for fitted wardrobes, desks etc…

My daughter’s room is quite small so a double would be a squash…

Well then she can stick with her single can't she?! Didn't do most of us any harm. When she's finished school, working and earning and in her own place she can buy whatever she wants 😆

How does she feel about that? It’s her room, so if she’s willing to put up with a squashed room surely that’s her problem? If you can’t afford a double bed or one literally won’t fit, that’s different. But I don’t see any reason to say no if she’s willing to live with any consequences.

Maybe she could pay towards it, if spending the money is what you object to? Then you’ll know how important it is to her.

My 2 have a small double but that's not on your options list

holysmokee · 29/06/2025 12:00

I had a double bed from moving out of my cot and did the same with mine, more room to stretch out and less chance of falling out! Maybe you could get her one of the raised doubles so she doesn’t lose floor space? I think at that age what bed she has is her choice really.

I only had a single bed until I left home!

Small double?

Is it a point of principle? As PP said if you can afford it and there's space I don't see the issues in asking for a double bed 🤷

My children(not teens) have large rooms so have doubles to fill it and if they had their heart set on a bigger one they can have one but I would probably make it say a Christmas or birthday present, but just due to the price.

If we went by the I only had x when I was younger stance kids wouldn't have half the stuff they have these days!!
