10 month old up frequently

Hi,
Wondering if anyone has any advice. My 10 month old is up many times in the night (only sleeps a couple of hours at a time). He is breastfed and has a couple of feeds during the night, and I’m wondering if he’s expecting boob to go back to sleep! He refused the bottle from around 4-6months and then we just gave up.I’m at work during the day so I have been nervous to night wean in case he doesn’t get enough milk! I read that until age 1 most of their nutrition should come from milk.
is it worth trying a bottle again? Has anyone had any luck introducing at this age?
Should I just wait to night wean until he is 1?

What's his day routine like? X

Sazzlebear · 23/06/2025 18:57

He wakes up 7:30-8am, milk at wake up then breakfast around 1hour later. He has a nap after around 3 hours for about 1 hour. Then lunch around 40 mins after wake up, another nap 3-3.5 hours after first nap for around an hour. Dinner around 6pm. Evening walk around 7:30pm then up to bed, he has a milk feed and a story before bed (last wake window is around 4 hours). In his wake windows we are usually playing/at baby class/swimming.

Probably teething! Not sure i would night wean, BF is a god send for the teething struggles at 1 and older. Could try cosleeping maybe.

If you night wean, then it's likely you will struggle to get him back to sleep quicker and therefore your sleep will be more disturbed.

Is his last nap too long for him?
Also, could be the heat and the lighter nights. Hope it passes for you soon!

I should probably have mentioned the teething! He has a lot of teeth (teeth number 12 and 13 about to come in) and is cutting some molars right now (I can see half of the tooth).

Mine will be 10 months in a couple of days, also breastfed, teething and waking up all night long - so no help here but sympathies!

His schedule sounds perfect.

I’d try some nurofen for the teeth if you haven’t already. It’s much better than calpol for teething I think but also lasts up to 8 hours rather than 4 so will get you through the core night.

If he feeds to sleep that might be an issue because when he naturally stirs he’ll wake up noticing what’s changed- someone once described it to me as imagine you fall asleep cuddled up with your partner in bed but stir to find yourself alone on the floor, would you accept it and go back to sleep or would you fully wake up wondering WTF just happened and wanting some reassurance. But if tackling a feed to sleep habit and/or night weaning is something you might want to do I personally wouldn’t consider it until you’ve got this batch of teeth through as it’ll make it so much harder.

Also, I wouldn’t be worried about milk consumption, a morning and evening feed is perfectly sufficient for a 10MO that eats well and drinks water. I definitely would not be introducing bottles because ideally they should be ditched at 12 months to avoid teeth damage so no soon as you got baby to take one, presuming they will take one, you’d have to think about how to remove it.

Wow, he’s got all his teeth REALLY fast then. He’s got as many as my two year old. You may well find sleep naturally improves in a couple of months anyway

At 10 months my daughter woke 3-5 times a night whilst breastfeeding. We had to switch to formula at this time and it didn't make much difference except she only fed twice and we had to figure out how else to get her to sleep.
For her reflux, allergies and teeth massively impacted sleep. Especially the teeth as it triggered her to have worse reflux again

My breastfed 10 month old has a lot more food than that. At least 5 or 6 breastfeeding sessions (morning, late afternoon and evening), 3 full meals and 2 snacks....he's on the 40th-50th centile for height and weight so not huge. So maybe he's hungry?

Oh just seen your update. My son sleeps like a dream when he's NOT teething. When he's cutting a tooth it's up every 2 hours and cuddles every time. Molars are meant to be horrible. Nothing you can do about that.

We do give some calpol an hour before bed and nurofen right before bed and that gives us a 6 hour stretch of sleep when he's teething. They work much better together than just calpol.
