3yr old ds missed nap today- how early would you let him go to bed?

He's 3 1/2 and only very rarely goes without a nap in the daytime as he gets incredibly tired and upset by dinner time (i.e. about 5pm). Bedtime however is fairly late at 8.30, as although he needs this daytime snooze (normally an hour ish but can be 2.5 depending on the sort of day we've had) if bedtime is any earlier it just doesn't work. He normally wakes in the morning about 7am.

Today we have been busy and he didn't have a sleep after lunch, so we've had the inevitable tea time meltdown. I feel so guilty. He's too upset and tired to eat anything and is absolutely shattered poor lamb. But how early would you think is reasonable to go to bed? Don't want to get him off to sleep at 6.30- which I think he would gratefully comply with- if he's going to spring awake at midnight! Selfish yes, am 33 wks pg and dh is away for the weekend so really don't want a more difficult night than normal (could prob cope with an early morning though, tending to wake at dawn anyway for 350th wee of the night)

What do you think- when should I get him up to bed? Pregnancy fog is obviously clouding my brain as I can't process the information needed to make a decision!

I put my ds (4 next month) to bed at 5:30, he will sleep right through, but yours might not. What did you do last time he missed his nap?

Minkus · 23/05/2008 18:09

I really can't remember what happened the last time- pregnancy fog again I think . It was over a month ago and for me that is just soooo long ago, the conveyor belt of my brain just won't let me keep anything on it for longer than about 3 days at the mo (more )

I guess that because he now knows that if he wakes up and it's dark, he needs to go back to sleep, he's less likely to wake up in the middle of the night wanting to play? He's been a fairly good sleeper since day 1 so maybe I should just bite the bullet and let him get to bed and face the possibility of a likely early start (esp cos we live in the country and the bloody birds are so loud by 4.30!)

I would put him to bed before 7pm - I'm sure he will have no idea it is earlier bedtime and sleep straight through. I amd also being woken up at 4.30 every morning from the birds - annoying isn't it? I wonder if they wake my DS's up.
