How much should a 1 year old sleep in a 24 hour period?

Hi

My 1 year old baby usually wakes up around 6:30/7, has a morning nap at about 10:30/11, for about an hour sometimes just over.

He’ll sometimes have a Power Nap in the late afternoon, about 20/30 min.

After tea he will play a bit but we really struggle to get him to bed for the night before 9:30. last night I managed 8:30 and was shocked he actually went to sleep. He sleeps in his own room but gets in bed with us at around 3ish but will always go straight back to sleep until morning so he does sleep well at night.

If I cut out the quick afternoon nap he will be ratty until bedtime. I’ve never known a child to fight their sleep the way my boy does. He has done since he was tiny.

is this enough sleep for this age? He moans a lot throughout the day and I am starting to wonder if it’s because he’s tired. This morning for example I accidentally interrupted his nap after 30 min , he’s refused to sleep again until now and has spent the whole morning/early afternoon miserable. He’s not teething at the moment.

thank you

Forgot to mention we go out a lot to playgroups, playgrounds etc. when we have ‘home days’ I get the paddling pool out and we’ve got a sandpit so there’s never a ‘boring’ day as such

Most go to one nap at this age. I would try to push it to lunch time as much as you can then there won't be such a bug gap to bed time. Initiiit might make bed times early without the power nap but they will get used to it. It really sounds like they don't need it though going to bed so late, they will adjust 😊

1 nap after lunch of 1.5-2 hours
Bedtime 4-5 hours after waking from the nap
11-12 hours of overnight sleep

Would usually be typical a 1YO.

Morning naps can sometimes be a problem because they compensate for not enough night sleep but then in turn cause the bad sleep at night because it becomes a habit and it makes them overtired and fight sleep at bedtime because they’ve been awake too long by that point. It might be worth gradually trying to push his nap later.

when my son was 1 he’d sleep around 11 hours at night and then he’d have around 2 hours nap in the day however he dropped that nap by around 1.5 years old

I'd try to push back the nap until lunch time (do something active to keep him awake). He'll then be less overtired at bedtime and hopefully sleep better.

one nap in the middle of the day should bring bedtime earlier. DS has lunch 11:30/11:45 then down for nap by 12:30 latest then up by 14:15 or 14:30 latest on a nursery day and goes to bed for 19:00. he likes his sleep though so some might have a slightly later bedtime

I would expect 11-12 hours of overnight sleep and 2-3 hours of daytime sleep in 1-2 naps. It does sound like he may not be getting enough sleep.

I'm currently struggling with the same, I put it down to heat and light nights but I've just seen that one of my LOs molars has cut and another is coming, and that HAS to be upsetting things.

Thank you so much all for the replies - sorry for my late reply, we’ve been away visiting family. I think I’ll try as a few of you suggested and try to push his morning nap more towards lunch time and see if that helps 😊
