4 month old pushing chin to chest constantly!

Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone else is having a similar issue to us or knows the cause. So sorry if this is long and I’m rambling :)

My little boy is nearly 4 months old and he’s obsessed with being sat up. I think it maybe comes from his reflux and the fact that he’s always been kept upright during the day. Tummy time tends to make him upset and sick so we practice supported sitting a lot. He has great head control, keeps it held in tummy time and until recently he was holding it up while sitting. He doesn’t even need much support to sit, he can do it independently for a minute or so leaning forward, I just keep my hand on him so he doesn’t fall. I know he isn’t ready to be sitting and we don’t do it all the time, but he genuinely does love it and he’s at a stage now where he cries and strains if I prop him up because he wants to be sat up properly! All of this could potentially be down to reflux.

Anyway, this last week or so he’s CONSTANTLY pushing his chin to his chest. He won’t hold his head straight. He’s even doing this lay on his back? He does it in his bouncer too and whenever we practice sitting. I thought at first it’s him trying to pull himself up/forward because he was doing little crunches as well and pulling his back upwards when lay down, but I don’t know why he’s doing it while sitting! If I get his attention he lifts his head for a moment to look at me, or he will lift it to look at his toys but always pushes his chin back downwards!! He never used to do this and he can easily control his head but I feel like I’m constantly paranoid. I can’t put him down in his bouncer to do anything because I worry about his airways. It’s okay lay down because if he starts falling asleep he naturally relaxes as it seems to actually take effort to push his head downwards lol! I’ve kind of stopped helping him sit just because it scares me, I can’t even slide a finger under his chin but he’s also doing it in his pram and even in his car seat! I absolutely cannot understand where this is coming from, he can easily lift his head and will do if I keep his attention!!

Im not sure if there’s a reason to be concerned or im just being paranoid because it’s obvious it’s not that he can’t support himself, he’s actually making effort to keep his head down, I’ve even tried tilting him backwards on my lap to see if his head will move back but nope! He pushes it to his chest lol!! Has anyone else experienced this? Is it just a phase of development or suggesting an issue? I was thinking maybe it is part of his reflux but I’m unsure because he’s never done it before and if anything, his reflux symptoms have actually improved. He doesn’t seem uncomfortable or upset while doing it and he smiles and laughs at the same time if I’m talking to him which he doesn’t do when he’s uncomfortable with his reflux usually.

Sounds as though he has just discovered he can do it!

I wonder whether he might be starting teething and is in discomfort from that, but you say that he seems happy and smiley so probably not.

I have been thinking he could be teething but I’m not sure! He’s drooling so badly we are changing his outfit multiple times a day. He has been more unsettled recently and been refusing to nap and sleep but I assumed this was a sleep regression. I actually think he learned the head pushing from sucking his hands! He’s been obsessed with his hands for weeks and they are permanently in his mouth but I’ve been keeping them out at times because I was getting a little concerned he wasn’t reaching and grabbing things (because there’s never a second his hand isn’t in his mouth!) so it could actually be that he’s trying to find his hands!
