Do people choose their kids' clothes for them on "wear your own clothes day" ?

Or is it just my two who have the most appalling dress sense you have ever seen?

They have lots of nice clothes but have gone in today looking like they are off to a bad-taste party.

Everyone else's children look really nice.

Every day is no-clothes day at dd2's primary school, and tbh most of the kids look as if they've been given free choice in the clothes dept. I rather like it, makes me laugh.

ppl in my street probably think i go temporarily colour blind at the weekend! my dd1's fave outfit consists of green and pink striped tights (that are meant to match a green/pink top) with denim skirt that has a pink polka dot trim, a really ugly brown vest top and a glittery red bolero cardigan.

but then she is only 4 so i guess she has time to develope her dress sense

pagwatch · 23/05/2008 12:26

I let them choose their own unless they come up with something deeply inappropriate - like when DD wanted to wear her swimsuit and trainners in her first term ( I was tempted) and the next one she wanted to wear an astoundingly expensive dress . So she can choose but I have a veto

I have just about brainwashed dd2 into accepting that you should only wear one striped item at a time. There was a hideous phase where her school outfits would be: stripy tights, stripy skirt, stripy top, stripy jumper (all diff coloured stripes, natch). Stripes, spots and flowers combos otoh are still very much in favour.

NotABanana · 23/05/2008 12:30

I let them chose but I wouldn't let them go out looking in such a way that people would laugh.

My DD went out the other weekend in a lot of differetn pink clothes incorporating stripes and spots. if you can't dress like that when you are 4....

BalloonSlayer · 23/05/2008 12:31

Yes I normally veto the worst, but still . . .

I do wish sometimes I could put a card them which says "Child dressed itself today."

Having said that I think I could control what DS1 wears every day simply by placing my choice right at the top of his drawer.

Lately DD (6) wants to do her own hair. Particularly bunches. Sometimes I just have to tell her she is not going like that, it's too awful. Then I worry that when she's grown up she will throw it back in my face "You destroyed my self-esteem because you always told me my hair looked awful." (Am even considering taking photos to use in my defence in 10 years' time.)

Frogs, that is very good going.

I've given up.

Hi jura! Ds went through a teeth-grittingly awful phase of wearing cycling shorts with grey school kneesocks (with turnovers!) inherited from some older cousin with a poncey prep school uniform. The effect was beyond ridiculous, but he wouldn't be talked out of it.

OrmIrian · 23/05/2008 12:35

I try to steer them a little. DD would pull out any old thing and not care if it was dirty, too small, had holes. DS#1 would find his favourite things which usually are too small, dirty and have holes DS#2 would find anything that had scoobydoo on it - regardless of whether it had was too small, dirty and had holes.

Note to self - throw out old, holey clothes regardless of how 'useful' they might be for mucky stuff and how much the DCs like them.

HappyMummyOfOne · 23/05/2008 13:41

DS chooses himself, he has good taste in clothes and loves shopping for them more than toys (no idea where the love of clothes came from) - his combinations are good, he just fails to remember the weather bless him.

MamaG · 23/05/2008 13:45

DD 8 chose her own today, but I vetoed the first choice as too cold

schneebly · 23/05/2008 13:49

we had mufti day today and I just gave DS a choice of 2 different outfits - nothing fancy just stuff he would wear at the weekend. If he was chosing himself he would have wanted to wear his boilersuit/overalls or a spiderman costume I suspect!

Cappuccino · 23/05/2008 13:50

yes my dd wanted to go in her dirty trousers that she plays in in the garden

I said 'this or this' and held them up

no escape

DS#1 had a phase of wanting to wear an old black blazer that he'd inherited from his cousin to any sort of event. He thought he looked smart. With jeans. And with his long blond surfer locks he looked like some sort of 70's rock star.
