Reusable nappies

Needing to cut back on costs so wanting to use the washable nappies. I am a bit overwhelmed by the names, types, sizes etc that I read on the nappies for sale topic though. Is anyone able to advise me on amount needed, size and the best brands? My dd is 13 months and weighs approx 11kg. Thank you

Depends - for cheapness, and ease of drying, you can't beat terry squares or prefolds, but not everyone gets on with them and they do have a bit of a learning curve.

Personally, my next choice would be Motherease one size as we've used them everyday for 19 months or so and found them very easy to use. They do seem to be a bit like marmite though - people love them or hate them. Very easy to pick up second hand though.

You can hire kits from most nappy sellers so that you can try a variety before buying, or your council/NCT group may do loans.

We've used Bambino Mio prefolds on ds for the last 5 months or so with disposables at night. Agree with cmot there's an element of faffery initially but once you're up and running they're really easy to wash and dry.

Def. recommended.

I would start by entering in your details on the questionnaire on the nappy lady site as they'll have some good advice to start you off. For squirmy toddlers people often rave about pocket nappies like Fuzzi Bunz, Bumgenius, etc but they can be on the expensive side - perhaps buy a couple used and see how you like them? I use Itti Bitti D'Lish nappies from www.twinkleontheweb.co.uk which I find fab - you'd want to go straight for the large though as I have a medium one on DS who is only 4 months old.

Yep, go for large - we switched my son at 11 mths and went large and he only needed a few XL wraps for nighttime from age 2.

For summer I really like Motherease Sandy's or their Toddle-ease (ignore the sizing, both will fit at 13 mth old) - they are bombproof and can be pulled up whilst standing as well as done the more usual way. They are great for the garden - just stick them in the nappy without a wrap when the weather is hot. Also I'd avoid velcro as at 13 mths, your LO is going to love undoing it.

As to amounts it depends how often you wash and dry, you could factor in 5 per day/night at most and then either go for 10 or 15 depending on your wash/dry schedule BUT you do not have to go the whole hog all at once, just buy maybe 4 and 1 or 2 wraps and see how you go.

Thank you and thanks for the tip on the velcro. Will buy a couple of each second hand to see how I get on. Cheers for the links too.
