How to keep baby cool at night?

I have a 6 week old baby and this year is terrifying me. Last night our bedroom was 26 degrees. We had a fan on in the room but it didn’t seem to make much difference and was still at the same temperature so I ended up sleeping downstairs with our baby.
is there any other way to cool the room or keep baby cool in a room like that? Or do I need to keep coming downstairs where it’s cooler?

Do you keep the windows open and the curtains closed during the daytime in the bedroom? Our bedroom has a large window and faces doubts. It’s unbearable if its hot and the curtains have been open all day Flowers

We keep the blinds and curtains shut so the sun can’t get in. Our bedroom faces the sun just about all day so the back of the house is always so so hot. The bedroom is ridiculous so I don’t feel comfortable sleeping up there with her while it’s so warm!

I know what you mean. We had a very hot spell when DS was 1. His bedroom had the sun from the hottest part of the day until sunset.

I put him in a nappy and that was it.

He was one though and I appreciate that yours is much younger.

Keeping the curtains closed during the day is good but with our bedroom we have to keep the windows open as well to keep the room at a reasonable temperature.

I always found a cotton vest better than just a nappy. My two would get horrible heat rash/prickly heat unless they were in cotton.

Remember that babies live in very hot countries and are absolutely fine. If very hot I’d try cool the room with a big bowl of ice (on towels for condensation) in front of the fan. It didn’t make much difference but after a few changes of ice it cooled it down a bit.

Agree with those tips:
-Curtains closed all day to keep house cool
-Good quality fans. Multiple fans in bigger rooms. We’ve had up to 3 in a room to sleep comfortably in a previous bad heat wave. We love the Ansio Tower Fan. Using in now and feels lovely and cool 😊
-Baby can sleep in just a nappy and very light sleep bag if needed

When DD was born it was 36 degrees. We had to buy a free standing air con unit. One of the best things I've bought.

Stop worrying. I’ve been there and was worried but looking back I didn’t need to be. Now I have another small baby (who‘s sleeping in the attic now which gets hotter
than other parts of the house). My baby first was born in the heatwave of 2022… it was horribly hot for the end of my Pregnancy (30 degrees in my hosp room!) and the start of her life. She lived in a nappy. She was totally fine. I did have her in a vest and the midwife said to just have a nappy on and she’d be fine, but it was over 35 degrees. We had a fan on in our room to circulate the air but not directly on baby

It’s not that hot. Baby in a vest or just nappy will be absolutely fine!

tuffinmops · 14/06/2025 19:13

We had the 40 degree heat wave when my baby was 6 weeks old. Opened windows at night. Closed curtains in day. Fan on, our side of the bed so not too close to baby as it can get them too cold.

She slept in a nappy or vest and was fine.
