Looking after your child's teeth

This is a silly question but what causes cavities and is brushing your teeth the only way to avoid getting them?

Brushing with a good fluoride toothpaste and being mindful of sugar intake are the most important part things - it’s not so much the quantity of sugar that matters, it’s the frequency. Genetics also play a large role - some people have stronger enamel than others and are therefore less prone to decay/cavities. My DF was a perfect example of this - ate rubbish, smoked and drank his way to his deathbed yet had perfect teeth and a clean bill of health from the dentist for his entire life.
