Breastfeeding a 3yo on Jeremy Vine

Did anyone see the segment? “Is it ok to breastfeed a 3 year old?”

I’m disgusted at the things that were said on television no less and have complained to off com

It is perfectly natural to breastfeed a 3 year old

Also, it’s quite obviously them trying to drum up ratings, it shouldn’t even be a discussion. Women serious can’t do right for doing wrong.

A three year old should be eating proper food. Absolutely no need for this extended breastfeeding feeding fad in this day and age.

You can do both. Obviously.

My boy is nearly 3, and still feeds to sleep. He’s happy and I’m happy, which is all that matters.

This is what I did with my daughter when she was 3, it made bedtime a lot easier than it is now!

I'm torn on this subject. I have breastfed both my DC, still breastfeeding now. My DS is 26 months and the idea of him feeding now gives me pause to think. He is a very tall 2yo, 99centile, same height as his nearly 4yo cousin, so he is always held to a higher expectation by others because he seems older. Since his brother has come along he knows my breastmilk is "baby brubba milk". I feel like having that distinction between baby and big brother has really helped him adjust to everything. But I don't judge others, its just not for me.

My daughter is on the 99th as well, now that it’s been a year since I stopped breastfeeding the thought of breastfeeding her now seems a bit odd but only because our journey has long since ended. I certainly don’t judge anyone breastfeeding their 4 year old just because I haven’t… the size of the child has absolutely no baring on the conversation.

The point of the thread was that I cannot believe this woman has used her platform to say all of this, not to mention some of the comments and disgusting jokes her colleagues made

I doubt the child is ebf at 3 so that's a ridiculous comment. And it's not a "fad"to breastfeed for that bit longer, entire civilisations have been doing it since forever. It's not common/widely talked about here these days but it doesn't mean it's some weird cult.

I breastfed my son until just before he turned 2 (and got lots of comments about how I "should" be stopping) and whilst I personally wouldn't have wanted to carry on any longer, I'm not gonna judge someone else for choosing to.

No, sorry I didn't mean the size of the child effects whether you should breastfeed, I just meant because he is so tall it looks like im feeding a 4 year old instead of a 2 year old 😅 again, nothing wrong with that. Just how my brain thought about it.

I was disgusted too, so much misinformation on there. I didn’t personally BF mine long after 12 months but BF a 3 year old is of course ok as long as mum and child are happy!

minipie · 11/06/2025 18:30

I thought you meant someone actually breastfeeding a 3 year old on the Jeremy Vine TV show.

You actually think women breastfeeding 3 year olds aren’t also giving them 3 meals a day?

🙄

OP, it’s not for me- too old. My son was done by 2 years old and I was happy with that. But I agree it’s a disgraceful thing to discuss on television. There’s nothing wrong with it whatsoever. Comments like @Viviennemary’s show the mindset of the people making the programme.

GloriousBlue · 11/06/2025 20:38

We should be championing breastfeeding but the UK has such a narrow mindset when it comes to BF over the age of 1.

People think it's more "natural" to give a 1 year old a plastic bottle and UPF formula.
