1 year vaccines

I don’t usually leave comments on here but I’m always so grateful for advice on mumsnet and always find myself reading the threads so thought I would just share our recent experience with the 1 year vaccines.

My little boy had his 1 year vaccines and ran a very high temperature for 4 days. Me and my husband were getting concerned that his temperature was spiking every time the calpol and nurophen was wearing off. He had also woken 2 nights in a row to try and be sick but couldn’t as he was completely off his food. We decided to take him to a&e thinking maybe we weren’t giving it enough time to calm down at home. Thank goodness we did because after a long wait and tests etc we found out he was severely dehydrated which came as a real surprise because he had still been drinking all be it slightly less than usual. The doctor explained this would likely be due to him sweating a lot through his temperature. It also showed he had an ear and throat infection. He hadn’t been showing any signs of being poorly prior to his immunisations. Anyway after a night and 2 days in hospital.
antibiotics through a cannula and 2 fluid drips he is home and on the mend. This post isn’t to frighten anyone but I just wanted to say that if your gut is telling you somethings off and your know your little one isn’t right. (You know them better than ANYONE) then don’t hesitate to take them to hospital. If we had left it any longer he would have been even more poorly. The hospital staff, doctors and nurses were amazing and we couldn’t be more grateful.

I’m glad your child is OK now, but what does this story have to do with his vaccines?

The doctor said he likely became more poorly due to the combination of the vaccines and also having an ear and throat infection (which we did not know he had at the time) I was aware that it was usual for them
to have a temperature after the vaccines however I wasn’t sure how long was too long to worry about a temperature. It’s simply a message of my experience incase any details help anyone in the future.

My daughter unfortunately came down with chicken pox a few hours after having the MMR component of the 1 year vaccines (she had to have them separately). It's hard when you have illness and vaccines at least with the spots it was easy to see she was also ill.

It was reaction to her 4 month jabs that triggered her having to have the separately. I'd always say that even if you are fairly convinced it's the vaccines if you have doubt about whether it's normal in terms of duration or intensity speak to a medical professional... In the space of 4-5h we went from HV to seeing/speaking to the GP 3 times and then a trip to paeds.

OP said he became severely dehydrated due to 4 days of high temperatures, temperatures being a side effect of the vaccines.

Glad he's doing better now and good job you followed your instincts and brought him in. Hope you're OK too, always an awful time when they're sick.

Thankyou so much
