What can I use in bedrooms for the smells of weed and cigarettes from neighbours that’s toddler and newborn safe ?

We live in a second floor rented new build flat. We have a DD 2 almost 3 and a baby due in August. The long solution is hopefully in a years time we will be set to start the process of moving in to our first home - but for now this is where we are.

The flat is HOT and we do have portable ACs for when needed, but we have the windows open. The bedrooms face the front and we are surrounded by smells of weed and cigarettes coming in to the bedrooms. Just went in to check on my daughter and it stinks of stale smoke. We’re not smokers it’s coming in from the surrounding tenants smoking on their balconies. If it’s not cigarettes it’s weed or both.

what can I use in the bedrooms that’s baby safe ? For DDs room and of course the baby will be in with us when she arrives also? The windows are all set so they can’t open any further than an inch (there’s no way of opening them further) so it’s not even as if we have them open all the way (nor would we) but the smell is overwhelming.

Report then to whoever controls the building

Is there any way you can swap some rooms around so it's not a child's bedroom?

Twelvelights · 09/06/2025 01:28

Is there any chance you can move and rent somewhere else for a year?

Otherwise you can get sir purifiers from companies like Dyson that could help hopefully.

Twelvelights · 09/06/2025 09:50

Air purifiers, oops!

TatteredAndTorn · 09/06/2025 10:13

You don’t want to use anything to mask the smell. Cigarette smell is cigarette smoke which is harmful. Air fresheners are also toxic so don’t add those into the mix!

If I were you I’d close the windows and put the AC on. I wouldn’t want my baby breathing smoke. If you want to get something extra it would be an air purifier but they only work properly in rooms with the doors and windows shut. And you need to your research with those and make sure they are filtering out what you need and they are ok for the room size.

@HundredPercentUnsurei can’t switch the rooms unfortunately as they’re both at the front and then the balcony is the last window which is attached to the front room and kitchen and then the hall bathroom storage etc is at the back. If the kitchen and front room weren’t together I’d have probably swapped the front room and bedroom spaces.

@Twelvelights And we can’t get out of the Tenancy - I have one of those fries baby things that spray out the mist also so I may get that out for a descale this afternoon

@Renabrookthey are not interested in the slightest

@TatteredAndTornwe may do this. When the air con is on we have the window kit so the windows open but seals it and I suppose when it’s not too hot we can just use the fan setting anyways - it’s white noise also I guess

I’d get some air purifying plants. If you research some are better than others for smoke and toxins.

I second this. They will absorb the smoke rather than cover the smell. Not enough to make it safe for your DC but better than nothing.

pinkelephant22 · 09/06/2025 18:39

Oooh I hadn’t heard of these, just looking them up and will get them ordered

Surely it can't be fire safe to have windows that only open an inch?!

I'd keep the windows shut. The smell is the least of your worries really. Keep the smoke out.
