One year old keeps standing in full leg cast

Hi,

My one year old is in a full leg cast after fracturing his leg at nursery a few days ago.

We have been told he isnt allowed to stand on it and in the daytime we can stop him but at bedtime especially it is really difficult. We are in and out of his room like a yo yo as he keeps pulling himself up at the side of his cot and it feels like we are reinforcing it by going in and setting him down. It's hours of this each night so far.

How bad is this for the fracture/leg does anyone know?

Thanks

Just to add we have tried giving it a minute before going in, not engaging as much too but it is still being stood on several times each day.

He also drags the cast leg behind him when crawling which I thought was ok but the leg does seem to be at an angle so weight must be going on it but I can't be sure. I suppose the standing is more of an issue.

Ring the doctor tomorrow and ask, if it is an issue I think rocking to sleep then restarting gradually leaving the room when falling asleep alone once his legs better is likely the only solution.

Could you move his cot into your room temporarily.
He is probably standing because he wants you but if he's in the same room he can see you and he might not feel the need to stand up to call out.
(Although that will only work when you are in the room and I assume you don't go to bed at the same time).

He is a big boy so it will be very difficult as he doesn't fall asleep quickly and hasn't in our arms for a long time so I am hoping they will say it isn't too bad but I can't see them backtracking. 😅

I will ring them again and let them know what he's doing and see what they say tomorrow.

So my husband tried laying down on the floor next to the cot but that just seemed to distract him and make him stand up too!

How long will he be in the cast?
Could you have him in your bed (with a safety rail) while the cast is on?
Or would that be a nightmare for you getting him back into his cot when the cast is off?

3 weeks at least i think. I am waiting for the letter to come to confirm.

He hated co sleeping it is really odd as he is and always has been breastfed. He would get annoyed and distracted even as a younger baby. It could be because we never did it as a newborn so when I tried after a few months he didn't like it.

I'm a bit stuck for other ideas.
Hopefully the doctor can give you some reassurance and he isn't putting too much weight on it.
Poor little guy 💐
I read your other threads - I think I might have called him a her on one - apologies for that 🙂

Thank you for the ideas. I hope so. That's ok.

They did say it isn't the end of the world but he shouldn't be standing on it as it affects healing when i asked if he was allowed to initially but I am not sure what that means fully so will clarify tomorrow!

My son was exactly the same age when he also needed a full leg cast for a fractured leg he broke at nursery 🙈

he was never told not to weight bare, he walked around on it no problem (it was quite cute actually) and the cast came off as planned 4 weeks later xx

Ooo interesting to know thanks. I will definitely ask the question because it is so tricky probably impossible to not let him stand on it but good to know your experience and that everything healed ok. X

One of my children broke a leg at a similar age. The doctors basically said let them mobilise if they’re up for it and ready. I’ve got pictures of her climbing and cruising around with the cast on.

When it was still painful she didn’t really weight bare at all but was moving around on it pretty quickly. Weirdly she actually found it much harder to get around once the cast was taken off. She spent a few weeks being very unsteady and hobbling around.

Interesting. I wonder if the advice has changed or maybe it is the type of fracture it is a spiral one of the tibia?

Or the person I spoke to on the phone may be over-cautious? Let's see what they say tomorrow.

Yes, I expect it will feel odd once it's off too.

Couldn't get through to them as their line is always busy but I am letting him be as if we go in he will be up on it alot more often as he thinks we're coming back in.

This way it is just a couple of times. Hoping it will be ok and will try them again tomorrow!

Edited

My breastfed baby never took to cosleeping, it just distracted him 😂
