Clueless Dad Alert: Teacher Gifts—Is This a Thing?!

Hi all,
I’m a bit late to the game—someone on the class WhatsApp just mentioned end-of-term teacher gifts (either individual or money via one of those group apps). I had no idea this was a thing! Apparently it also happens at Christmas and when staff leave?
I’m the primary parent, chief boo-boo fixer, and bedtime story CEO, but clearly clueless when it comes to school gifting traditions.
Is this standard across most primary schools? What’s a normal amount to chip in? And are there any other surprise customs I should brace for?
Thanks in advance—genuinely trying to keep up!

You don’t have to but people can if they do wish!
It seems to be between £5 and £10 per child at our school but that goes towards presents for 4 members of staff which one parent coordinates.
As a former teacher though, the best present I ever received was a handmade bookmark from a child as they knew I loved reading. The handmade cards were treasured too!

Thanks so much—that’s really helpful! It’s the same setup here with four staff members, so I’m hoping £5–10 each will go far enough to get something meaningful.
I loved hearing about your favourite gift—so personal and thoughtful, and I can absolutely see why it meant so much. A teacher once told me she received five “Best Teacher” mugs in one year, so she quietly preferred a group gift card after that! I think the cash-and-whip-round option sounds like the safest (and least breakable) bet.
Thanks again😀

Yeah if it's an everyone-chips-in collection you just chuck them a tenner and hope the person organising it buys something nice. "Totally optional" of course.

Other surprise customs vary from school to school but at our last school your kid couldn't go to the PTA organised discos unless you bought tickets well in advance before the cut off date and you couldn't just take cash on the day, so DS missed his first ever disco (and is still salty about it almost 18 months later). If you have your kid in after school club every day you might also miss out on the lolly sales etc that they do to raise funds for the PTA, so if you hear about any of those, you might want to leave work early once in a while when they're doing that sort of thing so your kid doesn't miss out. Oh and there was a class What's App but not every school does those, but you need to know someone in the group to get added so ask around, DS was at that school for 3 months before we found out about it and it was where all the birthday party invites/groups were shared so he missed a bunch of parties.

About £5 is standard. More often in private schools. The main thing is to be in the ball and get it sorted as soon as the message comes out from the organiser. Sorting this stuff individually is a right pain.
Christmas and Summer is usual. Primary school only.

other customs…. Easter bonnets, wear your own clothes for charity days (worth getting hold of £20 in £1 coins to cover a year, world book day (search Mumsnet for ideas), bake sales, school fundraisers…. Off the top of my head.

and Christmas… you need to save about 3 x half days to cover school events at inconvenient times. PT meetings maybe 2 afternoons a year on top.

Oh almost forgot Book Fairs, where they get a load of books in the hall and your kid chooses one or two while you try and get a signal then tap your full details into some app or website so you can pay because they don't tend to accept cash anymore.

Haha—still figuring it out, but giving it my best shot! 😊
