Toddler tried to drink from an empty bottle found on ground

Hey,

I have health anxiety and as the title says. We were at the farm, in the outdoor playarea, where I watched my toddler (23m) pick up an empty plastic bottle and try to drink from it. Not only that but she cut her lip the other day so has an open sore.

I instantly took if away from her but now worried - what if the person had an active coldsore or a dog had pissed on it?

I'm terrified of coldsores as I have a 16 week old baby at home, so scared they will get terribly ill. And of course I don't want my toddler getting ill.

Please talk me down!

You watched your toddler pick up an empty bottle and drink from it? Why did you do that? What sort of bottle was it?

Tupperwarefan · 02/06/2025 18:55

Ah OP I was just like that when mine were little. Once my two year old picked a cigarette butt up and put the whole thing in his mouth. We were in Spain and I was so afraid of coldsores etc. But nothing happened. And nothing will happen as a result of your child putting a bottle to his mouth. Tell yourself it’s your anxiety. Because it is. I feel for you OP. Anxiety is horrible x

Always one! She took it from her, as she said. OP, toddlers get into all sorts. My youngest once managed to coat his hand in black London Underground grime and before I could wipe his hand he had licked it off…horror. He was fine. I think the chance of a cold sore off a discarded bottle is going to be fairly remote.

Oh stop it.

toddlers are quick and always find things to put in their mouths.

OP your toddler will be absolutely fine x

I didn't just stand there. She was in a sand pit designed for her age group while I watched a few feet away. As she was coming towards me, I went to get her water and turned around for a second and when I turned back, I saw her holding the bottle (a plastic bottle that was empty but was for flavoured water) which I instantly took from her. I didn't actually see it on her lips but knowing her she most likely did.

Very helpful

My toddler once licked a wall at exactly the height dogs pee at! He's a brawny 17 year old now. This is what toddlers do. Just do your best not to worry, they are very resilient.

My DC during the height of COVID, whilst waiting outside a supermarket licked the swinging sign. They lived to tell the tale. Honestly, nothing will happen and if you see their lip getting infected or anything then go straight to the pharmacy. They will be fine I promise.

Strawberriesforever · 02/06/2025 19:07

The col sore virus doesn’t live very long off the skin - maybe a couple of hours. It’s not impossible to catch it from a drinking vessel that someone with an active sore has used, but it’s unlikely.

The immune system is amazing & human toddlers have done much much worse without ill effects 💐

As a toddler my now taller than me 14 yr old used to kiss snails (he still loves snails & escorts or rescues any he finds on a path) - on several occasions this involved the whole snail head going in his mouth 🤢 DS totally fine, I can't speak for the poor snails!

OP, your child will be fine. If it makes you feel any better, my 4 year old once picked up a freshly discarded used condom on a the beach. I was appalled, but she was unscathed.

Nonna88 · 02/06/2025 19:46

I saw a toddler lick the side of a seat on the London tube when his mum turned around for a split second. They get into all sorts and they are so quick. Your baby will more than likely be fine.

MarioLink · 02/06/2025 19:56

They'll be absolutely fine. Toddlers lick floors and chew all sorts of things. A bit of dog wee wouldn't hurt and it's unlikely to be harbouring any kind of virus. Even if it is that's how immunity is built up.

Mine ate a large chunk of bird poo age one and was totally fine 😱🤢

jimbort · 02/06/2025 20:13

My son (fussiest eater ever) took something off the bottom of his shoe and ate it before I had a chance to do anything about it when he was a toddler. I’ll never know what it was, I like to think it was a vegetable or something healthy but this is highly unlikely given he rejected all the many vegetable purées i spent hours preparing . He didn’t suffer any ill effects at the time and is now a strapping healthy 19 year old. Who knows what goes on in the mind of a toddler 😂
