6 month old hasn't pooped in 2 weeks

So my little one is 6 months and recently started on solids (pureed carrots, watermelon and broccoli: not mixed together lol). She was only having no more than a teaspoon a day, as it's still quite early in the weaning process (although we stopped a week ago due to the constipation) but she has now not pooped in 2 weeks. I've seen the GP and they didn't seem too concerned and prescribed some laxatives but due to it being the weekend, it won't be available till tomorrow or Tuesday. She's drinks expressed breastmilk (nearly 900mls a day, yh I know greedy lol), so she's still getting her fluids in. She seems no different in her temperament, doesn't appear uncomfortable, still feeding regularly ect but I'm really concerned. She does strain every now and then but nothing so far.

Has anyone else had a similar experience and their baby be ok? Oh yh, she's passing soooo much wind as well

What did the GP prescribe? You can get lactulose without a prescription which is more like a softener if you wanted something asap or they say pureed prunes.
It's very common when weaning at the beginning. I wouldn't worry if you're GP isn't and your LO seems happy enough. It's great they are having so much fluids. My LO has always had trouble pooing so we stayed on lactulose for quite a long time.

Try the poop massage, if you google it, it will talk you through it

dontcomeatme · 02/06/2025 05:54

Not at 6 months but my breastfed 10 week old just went 2 weeks with no poop. GP didn't seem concerned which I found baffling as it was a high topic of conversation in our house. We tried all the tips and tricks but nothing worked. He had one big blow out and then again we're onto day 5 I think, again no poo. GP said there aren't any rules for breastfed babys?

I'm not exactly sure what they've prescribed but she said it was a stool softener. I haven't tried the lactulose but we have tried her on prunes, prune juice, apple juice (recommended by the gp) and still nothing.

Gosh, so it is something that happens. It's just so uncommon for my LO, she usually poops everyday, sometimes twice a day. So going 2 weeks is having us all a little concerned, except the GP lol.

Thank you all for your messages, she's still holding the poop hostage but hopefully, she releases it soon lol

My older DS pooped every day too so this is a whole new world. My OH is a bit obsessed about it 😅 but yes apparently "normal", which sounds bizarre to me ha

My baby was combination fed, but when we started solids, went from going regularly to only going every 3-4 days. Baby would go red and cry when passing a poo, which is what the GP told us was the problem (being upset rather than the long gap between poos!). Normally you can breastfeed them more if they haven't gone, but weaning is such a change (their gut bacteria will make lots of changes in response to these new foods, even small amounts). It's not uncommon to find that extra breastmilk doesn't work as well as it normally would while weaning to solids

The things that worked for my baby were:
Lactulose (once they are pooing again, you can reduce the dose to get them going once-twice a day, ideally). We needed to give it for about 10 days at a very low dose to keep everything soft so that baby was comfortable.
Water - you have to keep working on this and find a cup they will like. I personally found that extra breastfeeding wasn't enough, it has to be extra water with meals.
Prune purée in their porridge every day.
Weetabix for fiber once they were eating more reliably. We started with 1/3 of a biscuit around 8 months.

You will find so many threads on MN about weaning constipation, so don't worry, it's really common.

Ella’s kitchen puréed prune pouch. The whole thing.

I just wouldn’t offer it for breakfast before you head out for a day of shopping unless you want to destroy the baby change area of John Lewis, speaking from experience here. 🤣

She's already had 3 pouches of this but alas, she still won't release the hostage 😂

It’s really normal when they begin solids. We were even warned by the HV. Try giving puréed prunes. You can buy the Ella’s pouch or similar and they’ll poop quickly!

AliBaliBee1234 · 02/06/2025 10:41

Try some steamed pear, it's good for constipation. And sips of water.

Also a warm bath and tummy massage (look it up and it'll tell you how)

OtterMummy2024 · 02/06/2025 11:48

Tesco or Aldi prune in my house because we are cheap 🤣 @Househunters1

I’ve actually never bought them because I thought Ella was trying to commit daylight robbery! I instead bought a tin and made them myself. I don’t have this issue any more as I’m on the third poo of the day already (teething!)

OtterMummy2024 · 02/06/2025 12:16

Urgh the horrible smell of teething poos 🤮 yes that does get things moving...

I've not had a teething poo yet 😭 her two bottom teeth have come in the last couple weeks..... the 2 weeks she hasn't pooed 😅 my life. Trust my LO to be the odd one out

That happened with my DD and it started with a constipation cycle that went on and on and on. Her bowel got stretched out basically. So do not let the GP fob you off.

flibbertigibbetter · 02/06/2025 18:21

I’d give her some water, too. Plus prunes, peas, pears. The P foods are great for constipation. BUT in moderation as too much food may make it worse.

Homemade prune puree worked best for us. Soak prunes in water for an hour then blend.

Yes but this is pre weaning. Constipation once food has begun is much more of an issue even for BF babies.

DeSoleil · 02/06/2025 18:58

Topical Castor Oil: This is a great option for the really young babies. You can place about a teaspoon on your hand and rub on the abdomen in a clockwise direction (when looking at the child) at night before bed. Only use this method 3 times a week as it could cause diarrhea.

Potatogirlpie · 02/06/2025 20:38

Thank you everyone for your suggestions and advice. I will definitely be giving them a try over the next couple days. Please wish us luck. Ill let you all know of she manages to go x
