EBF 5 month old diarrhoea

Has anyone else experienced this please?

EBF baby 5mo, no bottles and no weaning has had 10-12 nappies a day for the last week. The GP thinks it’s viral gastroenteritis and she’s been checked over, no other symptoms just persistent diarrhoea that doesn’t seem to be calming down, if anything I think it’s getting slightly worse. I’m going back to them on Monday if there’s no improvement tomorrow.

If you’ve experienced something like this, how long has it gone on for? The GP expected it to get within 7 days but it absolutely hasn’t

That’s brilliant @RedRobyn24… has it continued to slow down?
perhaps slowly you can re introduce the changes you’ve made and if you see her tummy go bad again you can nip it in the bud quickly!

The last two nights we’ve had significantly less wake ups for nappy changes, which has been a huge relief, and in the day definitely 2-3 less changes over the last couple of days. So I am really starting to hope his is slowing down too!

Do let me know how you’re getting on, I have my fingers crossed for you!

She definitely back to normal now, normal nappies and normal amount, thank god.

I’ve deliberated about how to reintroduce milk to see if it was the cause, whether to have it myself or to give her some but she’s not yet 6 months and I don’t think I’m patient enough to wait another 2 weeks 😬 so I’ve had some dairy this morning at breakfast and I’m going to see if we have a reaction over the next few days from that 🤞 hoping we don’t very much

I’m glad it’s slowed down at night for you too

This sounds silly and may not be what it was, but the doctor said to me on the phone that it had been going on so long perhaps she was being reinfected with whatever it is and so I took every single one of her toys including her play mats and I either put them in the washing machine or soaked and scrubbed them in hot soapy water. That could be worth trying if you haven’t already done this.

Oh I’m so happy for you, that’s great to hear! I would have done the same as you, introduce dairy back into my own diet slowly. I hope that goes well for you also!

Funny you say that as I decided to re wash his most used toys a few days ago too. Will do the rest of them today to be sure. He’s just had his first dirty nappy of the day and it looked almost the most normal it has been in over two weeks!

I’d go to A&E to check for hydration. Diarrhoea for a week seems a lot to me. Better to be safe than sorry.

Hello! My son will be 1 in a couple of weeks and so far he has had the same problem a few times now!

The first time, it lasted pretty much 3 weeks to the day, and started to slow down a day or so earlier then they just went back to normal over night! The second time was pretty similar but probably not as long, maybe 1-2 weeks! Both of these times he had multiple dr appointments and stool samples sent off. Always came back absolutely fine.

He has had a couple more of these bouts since, but since being on solid food they have been easier to deal with and not lasting as long, and thankfully making less of a mess which meant less frequent outfit changes. Us and his Dr have noticed a common theme when he is teething badly, this is when it happens, and we also have to get timodine cream on prescription for when he goes through a bout like this as it makes his nappy rash so so sore due to them being so acidic.

Luckily for me, my son never turns down a bottle of milk, so continued to act completely himself and stay hydrated during these bouts, so us and the Dr haven’t been worried about it for that reason, and also because his check ups and stool samples have all always been fine too!

However, and not to scare monger, my friends baby recently started with very similar symptoms to my son, but they very rapidly, within probably 10 hours, developed further symptoms due to a bug, which led to dehydration and went rapidly down hill during that time and has had to have some time in hospital on an IV.

If your baby develops other symptoms or doesn’t act like themselves, definitely take a trip to a&e or give 111 a call for an out of hours appointment if the symptoms are only mild. Mother’s gut always, always, knows best!
