What age did your DS go into adult sizes?

Had absolutely no idea where to post this so apppologies if its in the wrong place.
Ds is 12, id say slightly above average height (dad is 6ft 3 and very broad) but hes not huge. I tried to get him clothes in JD today and the only teen brand that fitted him was berghaus. Everything else just doesnt seem to fit him very well across the shoulders. He's not big at all but well built. I was wondering around what height do they get away with mens small? I remember this age being difficult for Dd who was very slim but tall. Any brand suggestions that are a bit more roomy would be appreciated. Shopping is about to get a lot more expensive I suppose! He's already costing me a fortune in shoes because hes been in adult sizes since he was 10!

roughly when he turned 14 and was 5ft 6 ish he was in men’s size small.

Hoppinggreen · 27/05/2025 18:26

Around 10/11
He was around 5ft 4 at that point with size 10 feet, mens size small
Hes 16 now and 6ft 2

DS was 12 when he went into men’s small. Hey13 now and growing out of that. He’s 5’7 and very slender, but broad shouldered. Next do teen clothes aged 15 that fit him well too.

My 13yo has just gone from boy 13-15 and into men’s extra small adidas, puma, nike and north face t shirts - he can still get away with xl teen size trousers or age 14-15 in places like next/M&S/H&M as he has a slim waist.

My 16yo has just gone into men’s small t shirts of the above brands. Plus jack & jones men’s cargo trousers which do waist and lengths and men’s chinos/jeans if they do waist and lengths.

DS was about 11- he was 5ft7 then. He's now 14 and 6ft3. He buys his own clothes on Vinted and the like, so it's not that much more expensive than when I bought him new clothes when he was 10/11.

Eminybob · 27/05/2025 20:07

Ds is 10 and just starting to get too big for age 12 clothes which seems to be the biggest kids size most shops do, annoyingly, and men’s XS is too big. He’s a nightmare to shop for.
Shoes are also problematic. He can’t tie shoelaces (poss linked to his autism but absolutely cannot be taught) but is an adult size 7 so trying to find Velcro/slips on for him is not easy. Any recommendations there would be welcome.

At about 11/12.
He was tall but skinny so was hard finding stuff. He is now fully grown and just shy of 6ft 5, his Dad is almost 6ft 2.

ProbablyNotAPlan · 27/05/2025 20:30

Sounds like lots of your DCs were going into adult clothes around the same age.
MoggetsCollar I hadn't even thought about vinted etc thats a good idea. I got a load of basically new stuff (tags on some) front there for his school residential back in y6 so that we didnt have to worry about his nice things getting ruined. There were some great bits.
Thanks everyone!

@Eminybob what about Skechers slip ins for your DS?

elusiveemz · 27/05/2025 20:38

My 14 year old is in men's large now - he's 6ft and very broad.

Think he was 12 when he went into men's mediums - skipped small sizes!

My slim built but tall 12 year old is in men's small clothes

ElsaSnow · 27/05/2025 20:46

@Eminybob H&M go up to 14+ in boys and next and M&S both go to age 15-16 sizes in clothes for basics if you don’t want to go designer.

School shoes smart slip in loafers? Again M&S/next or Clarks. Skechers do slip on trainer but may not be “cool”? You could get Nike Dunks/Jordans with the mid/high tops and do the laces in a knot and then he’d be able to slip them on/off without undoing them? I know this is possible as my 13yo is lazy and doesn’t bother undoing them every time he takes them off!

Littletreefrog · 27/05/2025 20:49

With boys in my experience once they have got to around 12/13 they tend to move to adults X small or small. There really doesn't seem to be many brands that do children's sizes once they hit teen years.

PrincessofHyrule · 20/07/2025 13:40

About 12 and he wasn't in the tall half of his year. We could - and can still get school uniform in 15 -16 and he's 6ft now but for all casual clothes we had to start looking at men's from age 12/ Y8

PrincessofHyrule · 20/07/2025 13:44

And on brands. DS likes TKMaxx and Primark as he doesn't really like logo-ed clothes. However only Nike trainers are deemed acceptable we buy the out of date styles from the internet

coxesorangepippin · 20/07/2025 14:30

Ds is 11 and in small men's

He's about 5'3 and weighs about 120 pounds and is fairly broad

pavillion1 · 20/07/2025 14:32

13/14 mens xs & s
