I’ve been asked to work Monday, Thursday and Fridays. Does anybody work this pattern and how does it work for you? Is it good?
thanks

I don't but one day on, two days off, two days on two days off sounds pretty balanced to me. Working Mondays is good as there's less faffing about with bank holiday allowances etc

Howspieduh · 27/05/2025 19:32

I do!

I had to choose this really as family were helping with childcare so I needed go with their requirements. I like it. Only downside, I do get less annual leave allowance than my other part-time colleague, because of the bank holidays being on Mondays/Fridays. But then, I get paid more than her because of that also.

Sounds like the worst days to work, to me.

Especially in terms of that's when 5 of the 8 bank Holidays are, so it will cost you in terms of leave (in most contracts).

Also means you can't tack a day on to a weekend.

I presume this is what is being offered as someone else is not working those days ?

I used to, due to days my other part time colleague already worked. I actually liked it. I now work 4 days every week, and kept my Tuesday off which works out well for extending the bank holiday weekends. Also meant I got about 10 days off in a row and only used 3 days AL during the Easter holidays.

I worked 4 days but with Wednesdays off. I had to do a phased return due to pnd after having my daughter I found that I couldn't work more than 2 days in a row so the midweek day off was a life saver.
For me the advantage of the mid week break was it didn't take much to keep on top of the house work as it was only a few days since the weekend and also only a few days to the weekend of we had more time at the weekend for doing other stuff. My daughter only had 2 days at a time in nursery and the week didn't seem as long.

I used to work Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. It meant nobody had to wait more than 24 hours for a response and I never felt I got too far behind with two working days together.
To me, it was the perfect part time working week.

Do you have nursery aged children? I don’t work a Monday but at our nursery, we pay for bank holidays even though they are closed. It annoys me enough each Good Friday but I’m glad it’s not every bank holiday Monday! Might be worth just checking.

I work this pattern and have loved the quiet Tuesdays and Wednesdays with my children. However, now my daughter is over 3 I’m switching to Monday, Tuesday, Thursday. Love the midweek break but more stuff on for preschoolers on a Friday. It seems most people work 4 days and then have the Friday off.

Tbry24 · 28/05/2025 18:50

Do you get bank holidays off and paid for? If not why pick a Monday you will have to work every bank holiday?

BendingSpoons · 28/05/2025 19:04

I work Tue, Wed, Fri and like having a split week. Fridays are much quieter, both in terms of commuting and at work. I assume Monday is similar.

A colleague worked Mon, Thu, Fri. BHs were a pain. She didn't get enough BH allowance to cover all the Mon & Fri BHs some years (depending how Christmas falls).

School things e.g. inset days are often Mon or Fri.

You don't get a long weekend without taking leave, depends if that is an issue for you or not.
