School holiday club - movies

DD (4) attends a preschool attached to a primary school. She went to their holiday club today, from 9am - 3pm, and came back telling me that she watched Frozen in the morning and Toy Story in the afternoon. That's 2.5 hours of TV out of 6 hours at the club. It's been raining most of the day and I do appreciate that it's tricky to entertain a load of young kids inside for that long, but that's exactly why I paid (£42!) for someone else to do it!

AIBU to be annoyed? She's a very active little girl and I just know that bedtime will now be a nightmare as she's been sitting on her bum all day 🙄

On a more serious note, they also gave them popcorn during the movies which the NHS doesn't recommend for under 5s as it's a choking hazard. I'm not too fussed in relation to my own DD as she's 4.5, but there are 2yos in the class which will also have had it.

Yanbu

I tend to agree - I wouldn’t expect a holiday club to be allowing that much screen time, especially when it’s only until 3pm. On holiday days at home my kids tend to have screen time 4pm-5ish and I avoid putting it on before then, so I’d be annoyed if they’d already had a film (or 2!) by then.

My kids old school does a cinema trip for the big ones and the younger ones stay behind for a movie screening at school, and were given popcorn until a parent of the 2-3s class complained and it was changed to pom bears. But that’s one movie on a whole week’s programme. Two films in a day is so lazy! And also what a waste of money as you could have had her home for free if all she was going to do was watch TV. I’d definitely complain.

Yanbu both in terms of screen time and giving little kids popcorn.

Ok well I'm glad I'm not completely crazy.

I've sent an email to clarify exactly what/how much they watched (as it is entirely possible that DD is exaggerating!), and a link to the NHS advice.

Jesus 100% YANBU and what a p1ss take to charge £42 for that! Surely the school wouldn’t approve of that? I get it’s usually run by external providers but there must be some kind of guidance for this sort of thing. Are there any other holiday clubs around? Not sure I’d trust those adults if they’re willing to put films on. My friend turned up to nursery once to find the workers had pur all of the babies in front of an iPad as it was lunchtime and they didn’t have enough cover. Not impressed at all.

My son told me something similar and it turned out they’d watched like 20 minutes at dropoff and another 20 minutes at pickup - not ideal but also not all day. So I’d clarify first but yes - if it was actually two full movies that’s crazy.

Yeah I’d be pretty irritated if I’d paid £45 for two movies. She could have come to work with you for free and watched two movies!

What was the plan for the day though? The holiday club we use has themed days. One day it will be a trip to a museum. One day it will be a music workshop. One day it’s cinema day and they do exactly that, movies and popcorn. It could be today was sports day or some other activity that had to be cancelled and they put on a film during quiet/nap times for the bigger ones so the little ones could nap.

As long as it wasn’t every day, I couldn’t get worked up about one day. Holiday club is not nursery. If I needed to work, which presumably you do, I’d be grateful to have my child somewhere they are still getting some social interaction rather than shoved in front of the tv at home all day, which would be my only alternative.
