Toddler poorly on holiday - advice?

In treated to get people’s thoughts whilst on holiday!

We’re currently in Greece and a few days ago our little girl ran a high temperature- she seemed generally okay until she started shaking a bit and her temp was showing 40.

In the night she seemed quite unwell and vomited and wasn’t eating/drinking so we called the hotel doctor who advised us to go to the local hospital.

We did this and they took throat swabs as she’d also complained about a sore throat. They said it didn’t show anything so likely just viral, but they were insistent on doing bloods and an IV.

Together my husband and I decided against this as she was already distressed as it was as she hates doctors and she’s never had any bloods or anything like that before, so we’ve been pushing any kind of fluid we can since coming back from the doctor along with dioralyte.

She still seems off today (has periods of running around), but now having a nap and her temp is showing 38 but I’ve heard letting it be at this temp is likely better so she can fight off whatever she’s got?

I’m mega stressed out but can’t decide if I’m over reacting - we come home on Tuesday, what would others do?!

Any suggestions welcome for a stressed mama and apologies for the long post!

38 degrees is a temp, but it's not a high one (37.5 being the boundary between having a temp and not). Do you have any Calpol or Nurofen with you? If so, I'd be giving her that on the dosing schedule on the label. Having a temp makes you feel rubbish and it's better to bring the temp down. Keep going with the fluids. If it's viral then it does just need to run its course, but I really would medicate so she feels better while she's shaking it off.

Do what you'd do if you were at home. Calpol, fluids, rest.

Every single holiday abroad one of our DC when they were young would be unwell!

It's probably viral so keep up with the calpol and nurofen and make sure she eats and drinks.

I'd watch out for any sign of an ear infection. She won't be able to fly until that clears up but fingers crossed she'll bounce back in time for Tuesday.

@cheezncrackers yes we have been medicating since the temp began (it was originally around 40).

it goes down to normal with Calpol but keeps going back to 38 - I won’t lie, it’s stressing me out quite a bit but DH seems very chilled about it which is making me more stressed!

This is probably her third day like this too - we’re managing to get lollies and juice/water into her but struggling with food which is probably making her feel pants too due to low energy!

@Sallycinnamum always the way isn’t it!

She hasn’t been unwell at home for around a year now, so Sod’s Law it’d happen just as we come on holiday!

She’s not eating much unfortunately, but managing to get some liquids/lollies into her!

The doctor did check her ears but said they looked normal, but will keep an eye!

Try not to worry too much OP. It really is par for the course with small DC to get unwell pretty regularly in the early years. It's how they build up their immune systems, but it's frustrating and stressful as a parent, particularly when you're on holiday. Don't worry too much about food - just keep up with the liquids of all kinds - milk, water, juice, ice lolllies, just whatever you can get her to take.
