SENSORY NEEDS AND SOCKS ADVICE PLEASE

My son is 5. ADHD probable ASD with a lot of sensory needs.
Socks are a major bugbear. He cannot cope with any type of sock and it takes a looooong time for him to get them 'comfortable'. Will take off at school if needed and put back on but will have a complete meltdown when he comes home because he has masked his discomfort all day since PE. (He will not tell the teacher etc. At school he is a bit quirky but doesn't want to be different to anyone).
I have bought loads of socks. Normal. Bamboo. Soft cotton. Sensory socks (cost 30 quid for 3 pairs ot seamless socks that have 'lumpy' bits in the toes) I have written and said he is not happy with them and asked them for other recommendations.
Does anyone recommend any that have worked with a sock sensory son? (Or daughter)

Thank you.

Currently M&S ultimate comfort which have seamless toes are the only ones that DS will tolerate for any length of time. I too have tried the super expensive ones from sensory stores with no success! It's trial and error I find and endless adjusting, taking off shoes, pulling socks up/rolling them down, picking at the toes etc There were some from Peacocks that were ok but I've never found them again.

Dd will only wear socks shop bamboo ones.

Thank you. I will check these out asap.
It becomes so frustrating. I also have sock issues so I get his upset but I do not have it to the extent he does. Lol

Sock shop bamboo but unfortunately they are not as good as they used to be. Also don't last long.
I got some m&s ultimate comfort and like them for myself. Elastic too tight for dd.

Mynewnameis · 18/05/2025 20:20

Ps. I would ask for him to not change for PE as a reasonable adjustment

My kiddo likes these: soft and they stay soft after washing too. No more sock meltdowns on the walk to school anymore. Hope you find some for your child, it's a game changer when you find something that works.

Bigger shoes it was the only way socks were worn at one point the shoe shop would fit them in a half size higher than needed just for comfort

Have you tried short socks? My friend said this was his age helped her child and I was very skeptical at the time but after an adjustment period as with any change it has helped for school as there is less material so much less faffing to get them comfortable. For colder days he has some m&s cotton soft ones that were actually marked at women. For PE barefoot in hall I did get permission for yoga socks (with grip on bottom) at one stage

He also has bamboo socks from amazon they wear out super fast though

On weekends he has his brothers old socks they are stretched out and perfect for him 🤷‍♀️ honestly I've stopped asking too many questions at this point

My dd wore no socks to school for years. The school understood. Gradually she learned to tolerate her socks inside out.
She's an adult now and would prefer to never be out of pjs but obviously she knows that's not possible. She is barefoot and in shorts and vest as soon as she gets home.

One of mine didn’t wear socks until he was around 15 - I think he stopped tolerating them around age 2

yoshiblue · 18/05/2025 22:17

Definitely sock shop bamboo. My DS 11 says they are the best thing I’ve ever bought him….socks now go on in 30 secs rather than 10 mins!!!

FumingTRex · 18/05/2025 22:24

Have you tried these? Many of the socks that claim to be seamless are not, they just have less prominent seams.

Other things i found successful:
Reduce stress levels in the morning, my DS is more sensitive when stressed
Wear shoes without socks eg crocs or sandals, the outdoor type that cover toes are ideal,
Pack shoes and socks in the school bag to put on later
