Accidently threw my baby on the sofa

I accidently threw my 3 month old on the sofa.
I was sitting on the sofa with them on my lap i seen a spider crawling up me right by them I instantly threw them on the next seat to me I as jump up to get spider off me. They landed on their front I have a leather sofa. They didn't cry or anything. They are seem completely fine. But know I am in complete and utter shock and guilt that I have done that i am now constantly panicking. I also feel like a terrible mother.

Do you go to any toddler groups or anything similar where you can spend time with other mums?
When I had my eldest two being able to spend time with other mums helped my anxiety so much. Especially in situations like yours where I was beating myself up over something silly ( well silly in hindsight 😅)

My latest was dropping my phone on my poor 9mo dd6 while she was sleeping hard enough that it woke her up and then worrying for the rest of the night that I’d concussed her (she was totally fine and happy once she got over the rude awaking )

I do go to baby groups which really do help

My 6 year old went over the handlebars of his bike today after I encouraged him to have a go at the hill. He has a broken arm now. These things will happen plenty of times in parenthood. Be kind to yourself. (Ds has been bought a lot of Minecraft bits as I feel so guilty!)

😳🤦🏼‍♀️

but it did make me smile…at least you were trying to give him a sense of independence and risk taking, better that than helicopter parent 🤷‍♀️

But as I always said, better bones than teeth…the nhs still fixes bones for free 😉🤣🤣🤣

(From the perspective of a taxi driver) a woman and her child get in the back perfectly normal when out if the blue she starts aggressively slapping her child on the head then dumps a bottle of water over her before checking she was OK?

From MY perspective my daughters hair was on fire and I tried to put it out with my hands before realising I had a bottle of water with me and used that instead 😅 you often don't react how you think in stressful situations I would have thought I would remember I had water and not traumatise my child by randomly slapping her but apparently not

How did your daughter set her head on fire?!

Yep, we all want to know that!

Motherofdragons24 · 18/05/2025 22:36

Im sure she’s fine OP. Sometimes we do things instinctively in the moment that are a bit silly. I remember I thought my then 8 month old had put something in her mouth. I went over to her and stupidly stuck my finger in her mouth to see if anything was there. She bit down with all her power and wouldn’t let go. I instinctively slapped (lightly, I suppose) her on the head! Not in anger or retaliation just to get her to let go. I was horrified and felt so guilty. She looked a me a little shocked and crawled off to put something else in her mouth. Anyway she’s 4 now and she seems perfectly fine (well about as fine as it gets with 4 year olds!)

I dripped molten hot cheese on newborn DS’s head eating my dinner while breastfeeding. Also fell down stairs with him and another time he rolled off the bed. DH once dropped him getting him out of the bath as he started weeing on DH’s face. Dont beat yourself up OP!

I slapped my 11 year around the face the other night. They woke me in the night and I must have thought I was being attacked. Luckily DCs are all laughing about it now. Felt terrible but was instinctive therefore not in my control.
OP it was an instinct to throw your baby, you threw her onto a soft landing (not on the floor) so even when panicked, you kept her safe.

Really need to know how a child's hair was on fire??

MrsSunshine2b · 18/05/2025 22:58

You'll look back on this in 4 years and laugh.

I remember how fragile my DD seemed in those early months and the lengths I took to be so gentle, feeling like a terrible mother if I ever let her experience any slight discomfort.

If new-mum me knew all the ways I've been a terrible mother since then she'd have a heart attack.

Flyswats · 18/05/2025 23:04

I think your baby will be fine landing from your lap to the sofa. My DD was 3 wks old when she threw herself off the sofa, onto a wooden floor, face first. And apart from being red and screaming for a few minutes, she was also 100% fine.

doodleschnoodle · 19/05/2025 07:05

Reminds me of when I walked in to DH mid-throwing DD2 onto the sofa. He tripped while standing up holding her and he had to chuck her onto sofa to avoid falling on top of her. She was fine!

I am concerned you have post natal depression.
If your baby was sitting on your lap how did they end up on their front on the sofa.
A 3 month old baby is not a feather weight - it would have taken some effort to lift them and throw them on their front and they would have cried from the sudden action.
Most people would have held them with one arm and brushed the spider off with the other hand.

🤯

Lol yes we checked his teeth before his arm 🙈 thankfully the helmet had a large cap bit at the front which took the brunt for his face!
