Those of you saying no screen time for under 1s, what did you do if you had older children? I wasn’t going to tell my 4 year old he wasn’t allowed to watch any Thomas in case his younger sibling happened to see it.

My 4 year old is allowed to watch TV for about half an hour after lunch at weekends while his sister is napping.

yes I used to sit my then 6 month old in front of dancing fruits and monkey videos for over an hour each day as she was miserable every evening, she’s 3 now, has it made her tv mad? No not at all, and I don’t regret it at all, she was a happier baby and I was a happier mum

You do something else with the younger one.

My 4yo only watches an episode while I put the younger one down for a nap. But sometimes they choose to sit andnraw instead, or listen to their Yoto player or 'read' stories or play with their cars / toys in their own bedroom. Anything really!

My youngest is 2yo and has only caught the opening credits of whatever show the eldest has chosen for their episode, often Fireman Sam. 2yo is starting to drop their nap sometimes so Tv time is even less these days.

My DH is away a lot abroad and I have no family support either.

But then I don't watch much TV myself and when DH and I met neither of us had a TV in our respective flats so I guess if you're uses to not watching it then you don't really miss it. 🤷‍♀️

Depends what you mean by screen time. Sitting them in a bouncer in front of the TV or iPad, then no. Having the TV on in the background while playing or something? Yes.

I wasn't going to tell my eldest she couldn't watch TV anymore in the living room unless the baby was asleep, and equally I didn't want to never watch TV. We'd be quite content playing with Duplo blocks or stacking cups while I had a film on. Same with things like cooking shows or the news.

I don't think it's a big deal. Although, there's a difference between the TV parenting your kid and bunging the TV on gor a few minutes so you can have a 💩 in peace.

No regrets - it was about my survival at the time for life with a very poor sleeper. Meant I could have a cup of tea in peace. It isn’t one or the other in my opinion - we still read lots of books, went out plenty and played and she’s never been a big screen watcher as she’s got older.

My eldest didn’t walk till she was nearly two 🤣 She didn’t crawl much either. She sat playing a lot and we always read to her and took her out a lot but there was a lot of TV watching too. She’s nine now and very bright. She can also play for long periods on her own- with crafts/arts/lego. My eldest now adult son had far less screen time as he was never still and a little Tasmanian devil but never engaged as much in solo focussed play like she does. He needed/needs a lot of physical activity.

I did not allow screen time under 2 for my DC. Then only CBeebies until 7.

JustGoClickLikeALightSwitch · 19/05/2025 10:53

I can't remember when we started TV for my younger two but I suspect that between an older sibling and the enormous difficulty of baby twins it would've been early. Ms Rachel featured heavily. It's fine.

Iloveeverycat · 20/05/2025 08:08

My main objection is giving babies and kids phones and ipads and just letting them watch it on their own just to keep them quiet as I have seen many times in supermarkets, restaurants and waiting rooms.
My children used to watch TV.
My DC are in their 20s now they used to watch videos of Barney, Rosie and Jim, tots tv but you watched with them and they were singing and learning at the same time.
