8 week old in hospital

No real reason for post, just wanted to vent.

Sat in a children's ward with my 8 week old after she spiked a temp of 39.1.

She had been sleepy all day, a few odd coloured nappies, but I didn't think much of it. Just on a whim while I was getting her ready for bed I took her temp; 38.2. waited 15 mins, took it again 38.4.

111 we're useless, they called me back on my phone when we had asked to be called on my partners, so we missed the call. Waited another 50 mins for them to call us back, and when they didn't I made the call to just make our way to a&e.

So deeply glad we did as they still haven't called us back!

Arrived at a&e and seen immediately, babies temp was 39.1. Very swiftly surrounded by drs. Baby was breathing oddly and had a HR of 200. Very traumatic watching them trying to get a cannula in. Admitted overnight for antibiotics, observations and running blood cultures.

I've not slept a wink. They wouldn't let my partner stay and he's not insured to drive the car we borrowed from a neighbour to get here (our car is in the garage 🙃) so he's sleeping in the carpark.

Feeling greatful for my intuition, guilty for not trusting it sooner, and tireder than I thought possible!

Still here, no results this morning so have been prepared to expect to be here a other day and night, at least. LO is still so sleepy. She's sleeping better down on the bed than in my arms, which is so out of character for her and it's breaking my heart a little. I'm walking her every 2 hours to feed (EBF) but she's not eating for more than 8 minutes, which is about half what she would usually do eating 2-3 hourly on a well day.

Did anyone who had little ones in hospital so young EBF? I'm worried about depleting my supply as she's feeding less. I have pumped a little in an attempt to keep demand high, but not sure if that's the best thing as it's leading to some breasts engorgement 🙃

My little girl was EBF and had urinary sepsis at 7 weeks old, because she was so poorly and not feeding properly I was terrified I’d lose the ability to feed her (she was my first baby). However my supply just picked up again as she gradually fed more as she got better xx

Don't feel guilty, we aren't able to know everything that's going on. Something in you made you check her temp so that's amazing and babys getting better now. Everything will be just fine and hopefully you all get home soon

I wouldn't worry too much about your supply - the last thing you need is to ramp it up and end up with mastitis. Once she's well she'll probably cluster feed like crazy anyway. Hope you have a good night x

As long as you feed some and don’t stop your supply will sort itself out and regulate to what she wants when she’s better. When my 8 week old had identical symptoms he was tube fed at first so I pumped and I got engorged too but then went back to ebf but like you say less than usual. He also slept like a log in the bed so I had to wake him to feed which is so sad when you’re used to them wanting cuddles. Xxx

@miniworrythey want to do a lumbar puncture later today. She's been so sleepy for 36 hours now. She's responded to paracetamol somewhat and was awake and not crying for 30 minutest or so, but still running temp.

They've advised me not to go in for the lumbar puncture. Did you go with your little one? I feel like a coward for not wanting to go, but also worried I'll be haunted by the screams and not being able to comfort her 😭

Can you and your partner swap over if he is stuck outside? And he go in with her?

minnienono · 19/05/2025 08:05

Hoping you have answers now, brings back memories - was only an ear infection (and so they didn’t need to investigate) in dd but was so hot … injecting antibiotics and paracetamol actually did the trick rapidly in our case but they took it very seriously.

Still here this morning. Little on is SO much more herself. Woke every 2 hours overnight demanding food, which sounds like a pain but is so normal for her. I practically lept out of bed every time 😂

All blood cultures came back clear, so no big nasties. Probably just a run of the mill viral infection that's knocked her for six because she's so little. Just waiting for LP cultures and if they're all clear we can go home!

@FruitPoppet this makes me so glad to read! So happy that your little one is on the mend and that nothing came up in the cultures. You must be so relieved xx
