Child sick after inflatable pool

Not sure if coincidence but I my 5 year old has been feeling ill after playing in inflatable garden pool. Says she feels sick. Her tummy making some crazy noises and she is it hot.

She was using the garden inflatable pool 5 days ago. I emptied the water but left the pool outside for 5 days then used it again today . I did not clean it before use. Just didn't think 👀

Could she have picked up something? The water was filled from the tap using a hose. Filled up using hot water tap and cold water tap.

She as was the only one in the water. We live in uk. Just worrying

I’m not sure, best keep an eye on her over the next day or two. If you rarely use the outside tap it’s important to run it for a few minutes before utilising the water. Watering the plants and lawn before filling up the pool would be ideal.

Stagnant water can also be an issue, it’s likely fine but might be a good idea to research

People get poorly sometimes

I really don't think it's the paddling pool

Are you sure it’s not sun stroke?

coxesorangepippin · 17/05/2025 01:58

More likely to be sunstroke, but yeah maybe change the water

I lived in Australia before household pools with pumps/cleaning systems were a thing. That was only with our big town/council pools. It was only when I got to my tweens that domestic pools as we know them today started coming in, and then the majority were above ground unless you were very well off.

Meanwhile, being a hot country, our childhoods were spent in very large paddling pools. They had large steel frames with steel legs, and were some heavy canvas type weave that was coated to be waterproofed. Enough room for you to comfortably splash around in with the neighbours kids also joining in. Generally, you’d also get the dogs in to splash around/cool off/play with us. Parents would all go sit in them with a drink(s) after kids gone to bed in hot weather as houses didn’t have air con back then either, so they were likely early versions of current day sex ponds🤣. They took quite a while to fill, and were big enough that it would take at least two adult men to lift one end enough to start to empty to make it easier to keep lifting as it got lighter with less water. As they were such a palaver to fill and empty, they were always left for as long as possible and generally only emptied/changed once water started turning colour, and we often got a couple of weeks out of them before emptying. Just given a brief hose out, then filled again. Never any actual cleaning. I cannot recall any kids getting sick due to our paddling pools, and every house I knew had one.

So, in short, I think it’s unlikely it’s your paddling pool.

ETA - I also remember we had non-toilet trained younger siblings/neighbours in them and shouting out ‘mum, x has done a wee’. We were just told to splash the water around and it would be fine 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Can you imagine today’s parents - emergency evacuation, showering of all kids, bleaching the pool, or potentially setting fire to it. The fact was though, it WAS fine, no harm ever done.

It's possible, I presume they use chlorine in proper pools for a reason, leaving water in a pool of any depth should be illegal due to safety risks with drowning but also health reasons

Toy pools i mean not proper ones with a fence

Lots of people not reading the op. She DID drain the pool, put fresh water in today. It will be too much sun or a bug she has picked up from other kids.

OtterMummy2024 · 17/05/2025 09:48

Lots of tummy bugs are doing the rounds, more than normal for this time off year. Easy to catch out and about.

You prob didn't clean the hose either the first time?
