Hi

My boy is nearly 5 months and has had a touch of eczema since about 10weeks tbh we don't think it's CMPA as he is very settled sleeps great can be put down straight after feeds think his eczema may s worsened by heat and dry skin it's in his crease and tummy that keeps coming back but this was after use of E45 it came out it didn't agree with him!

Does this look like cmpa poo? Never had the runny bits on it before but he is teething and has had a cold he goes to the toilet every 2-3 days

Any help would be great 🙂

No I wouldn’t say so

I am currently trying to research all I need to know about CMPA as i have a newborn who me and health professionals believe him to be suffering from.
I wouldn’t say that looks like a typical CMPA poop, but obviously I have a much younger child so may be different anyway. His stools are a lot wetter and always green. He also suffers with constipation and bloating, but then he has up to 7-8 diarrhoea poo’s per day, which are explosive and absolutely stink the house out.

The eczema may be unrelated, my little ones flared up straight away after a bottle, he went flushed and was clearly very uncomfortable. Then the vomiting would start and continue right up until the next bottle.

what prompted me to get him seen immediately was a new and worsening rash which felt like sandpaper, and facial swelling (eye)

the doctor said if I hadn’t have brought him in if would have likely develop into respiratory problems.

we are now on prescription milk number three and going to be changing across to Neocate (amino acid formula) after the weekend if the remaining symptoms haven’t cleared.

I would say to get him checked out if you have concern but I wouldn’t jump straight to CMPA from your symtoms. It could be something like lactose intolerance (which is quite rare?) or maybe he isn’t suited to the milk you have them on?

what milk are you using?

E45 I wouldn’t use, we have found Medihoney barrier cream to work well, it’s what they used in NICU and we have continued to purchase from Amazon since coming home.

out of interest, has your baby ever had antibiotics? Or a NICU admission?

Doesn’t look like it to me but I’m not a medical professional and only comparing with my son’s experience.

DS is CMPA and at 8 weeks had blood in his stool (breastfed, so would have had the proteins based on my diet and removing dairy stopped the reaction).

He would also come up in rashes on his face (around his right eye particularly), vomit after every feed, very grouchy, poor sleeper, couldn’t lie down and just screamed a lot. Lost weight but this came back once dairy was cut out.

Gluten would give him stinking and mucus nappies more than dairy. Not sure if formula has gluten in? Gluten bloats him and gives a rash too. His allergies are delayed reaction allergies, so build in his system.

He’s nearly 6 so advice may be a tad dated!

Thank you! He has a rash on his tummy but that started as soon as we used E45 and kept coming back unless use steroid I believe we just haven't found right cream we have been lathering on centraben and he still feels so rough and dry! Use olitium baby yesterday trialed it on his leg and his skin is silky smooth today so I will continue with that he used to have bad acne on face but that has cleared now he has a bit of eczema on his eyelid but we believed he had sticky eye as a baby and I was continuously wiping so I believe that irritated it it end d up being conjunctivitis we are under dermotologty and he gave us prescriptions for dairy free said to try it but if it unsettled it to swap straight back so I don't think they think it is but he wouldn't take the milk! We will be starting weaning in next month so I am going to try keep his skin clear and see if he reacts to any dairy

He is on cow and gate and drinks really well always usually settled so I would be surprised but who knows! He has had the odd green poos but seems to be a bit under weather teething etc not always like that
.I did wonder about the lactose as gets. Rumble in his tummy sometimes

He has been on antibiotics 3 times already due to ear infections and his skin got a bit infected at one point. I forgot to ask the dermatologist if a probiotic may help x

My daughter has allergies but her poos when she had a cold and were teething were identical to her allergies poos!
It's not uncommon to have slight looser poos as with a cold they are swallowing mucus so you can get bits in their stools and with teething all the drool can upset the balance. Given they have a cold and are teething and these aren't normal for them I would probably put it down to those rather than cmpa.
Whether is worth looking at cmpa as a cause of the eczema is probably a question for the doctors. It might be that this is their only symptom of cmpa and a trial of hypoallergenic formula would be beneficial to see if it helps the eczema

Lozza2503 · 16/05/2025 09:25

@Superscientist he wouldn't take it unfortunately 😭 all dermatologist said to swap back if he doesn't or the new milk unsettled him

Oh no, it took ages for my daughter to accept it she was an older baby and we managed to get her used to the taste by using it in food.
There's a cmpa breastfeeding group on Facebook that has lots of tips for helping to transition on to the formula as it is a common problem they taste so foul!
It is probably worth waiting now until weaning and see if having dairy as food causes the eczema to get worse or reconsidering cmpa if you are still struggling with the eczema at 12 months as there are then none formula alternative options which are more palatable
