Burping my 9 day old

I’m in desperate help as I can’t burp my 9 day old. I have put her on my shoulder which does not work. I’ve also sat her on my lap and rotated her and also patted her back and that doesn’t work either and after a while she resists and throws her head back. If she doesn’t burp, she is in pain and discomfort. She also has vomited all her milk up twice because she wouldn’t burp and I worry when I’m asleep she will do that again. Any other tips or hacks I can try? Thank you ☺️

She's tiny.

Have you tried paced feeding? Or small feed, burp, more feed?

She's still learning how her little muscles work, give her time.

Mine burped if I crossed my legs, put the baby upright as though sitting on my knee and tapped my heel up and down. Also on my shoulder if I walked up and down stairs quite jerkily. Every baby is different.

My DS is 4 months now but since he was born, he’s taken a while to burp. How long are you trying for? I find it helpful to try each position for a few minutes and just keep doing them over and over. Are you standing up after feeding to put her on your shoulder? That seems to work for us too.

My mom used to sit mine very upright over her knees and support their chins and rub their backs. Always seemed to work. Has anyone else tried?

Have you tried watching YouTube videos? When mine were v small I sat them on my knees and leaned them forwards and made a little v with my fingers that their went round their chin and held it up so it didn't flop forwards. Then gentle pats. It's quite relaxing for them. You don't want the chin bent down or the air can't get out. If she is on your shoulder her head shouldn't be over your shoulder just lying on your shoulder. It may just take patience and there will be sick. The early days are very hard as you and the baby are learning it all. If she arched back on your shoulder your hand should be on her back at all times so she's probably just got a tummy ache and writhing about. You can pace the room, sing. I think any motion. Be patient.

One of mine was a nightmare to burp- the health visitor demonstrated and when she sat them upright on her knee she hooked her thumb and middle finger under their armpits and really pulled them upwards so their back was stretched out. That definitely helped for us, and a mixture of patting and rubbing her back.

Also as a pp said, paced feeding, pausing for a burp in the middle, keeping them upright for a bit after a feed.

Remember it’s super early days, you’re both just getting to know each other! Don’t stress, you’re doing fine.

look up wonky winding - my second only burped when leaned to her left.

Also agree with paced feeding if bottle feeding, and check latch if breastfeeding.

Try lying her across your legs with her head off the end of them (supported by your hand) then rub. You can also try rubbing from the bottom of the spine to the top, rather than patting.

Have a look at wonky winding. It is really hard winding them when they are so small.

Mine were always better rubbing up their backs, rather than patting.
