Playpen for twins

Bobbieiris · 13/05/2025 10:00

I have 9 month old twins (6.5 months corrected) and they have recently started rolling and doing this bum shuffle thing when lying on their backs. I don’t think it’ll be too long before they’re on the move! Can anyone recommend a sturdy and large play pen that is good for twins? As I feel just baby proofing won’t be enough lol. Good value if possible but I am willing to pay up to £200 for a good one

Honestly it’s not the advice you want but I wouldn’t say it’s worth spending the money on a play pen in my experience! Once they are on the move & crawling the pen can just become really frustrating for them, my daughter hated hers as soon as she was on the move! X

mindutopia · 13/05/2025 17:39

No definitely not worth it. Once they are mobile enough to actually get into dangerous things (when they are cruising and walking), a playpen really won’t be suitable for containing two toddlers. Better off making one room really safe where you do most of your ‘being busy’ like the kitchen. And get stair gates to contain them in that space or from going up and down stairs.

I didn't have one for my twins. Waste of money. I wouldn't bother.

Having a play pen with twins is a game changer, mine are 4 now so haven’t used it in years but once they are on the move it will be really hard (harder) without one. I can’t find a link for mine but I remember it was a hexagon shape and extra large it also folded up. I’ll keep trying to find the link for you x

Mydadsbirthday · 13/05/2025 19:51

We had a kitchen diner room so I just got a large stair gate and fenced off a section of the room where they would be safe and I could be cooking etc and watch them

usererror57 · 13/05/2025 19:55

Agree with other posters - I didn’t bother with my twins either. You need a massive house and deep wallets for the decent sturdy ones. And theyd grow out of it pretty quick. I didn’t really baby proof either beyond a stair gate

SullysBabyMama · 13/05/2025 20:01

I disagree with the majority and a playpen saved my sanity! However I moved when they were 18 months and it wasn’t needed in the new home layout so maybe that affects peoples strong viewpoints.
Anyways, I had one of the wooden hexagonal ones.

Tulipsandtoast · 13/05/2025 20:56

If you’ve got the space then a room divider type thing works well, so you can section off part of a room.

MathsMagpie · 13/05/2025 21:05

We had this for our twins, absolutely fantastic. It’s a travel one and we took it to the beach, parks, grandparents, gardens, everywhere!!
It also folded down at home so was super convenient and wipe clean too!
We actually got a second one to keep at a relative’s house too - appreciate not the most appealing to look at.

We called ours the ultimate fighting ring. It was a plastic hexagon. Took up almost all of the lounge. And they hated it unless I was sitting on the floor. It quickly got popped onFB marketplace. And they just learned the sharp uh-uh noise if they approached anything remotely un-child friendly v. Quickly instead.

Tailor123 · 13/05/2025 22:07

We had the big hexagon playpen with a thick padded base when they were very little. When they became mobile we unhooked it and used it as a room divider so they had an end of the living room. However, twins are a totally different ball game and our two quickly worked out how to give each other a leg up past or over any barrier we placed. All stairgates, dividers, safe locks etc were seen as the ultimate challenge to conquer together! Even their cots were there to be vaulted over by standing on each others backs.

Always buy second hand and if it doesn’t work sell it in. We had a massive market of stuff between parents at our twins club

alcoholnightmare · 13/05/2025 22:12

I also had premature twins… how about two activity jumpers? I can’t remember what they are actually called, but like bouncers the kids ‘stand’ in and bounce and play with toys

Tailor123 · 13/05/2025 22:14

Jumperoos! They were brilliant and the only think that worked in keeping my two contained, however I always said that that’s how they got such strong legs!

Jetsettermum · 13/05/2025 22:14

We had this one first Linked here
it’s really big but doesn’t fold.

then we got this one more recently Linked here
this one does fold and is a different shape but still has lots of space and it’s great for travelling,

i 100% reccomend having a playpen for moments where you need run to the toilet or make a quick cuppa etc. I don’t use ours daily but it has been a godsend.

blackbadger · 13/05/2025 22:21

We used a safetots wooden playpen that you could buy different sized sections for it to make it a particular size - it was fantastic!

SouthLondonMum22 · 13/05/2025 22:23

I have this one for my twins. They are 1 now and it's still more than big enough for them.

Definitely a must have for twins!

Will depend very much on your babies. I couldn't put both of them in together , as my son used his sister as a stepping stone to try and get out. Great though when someone comes to the door, as you can pop one in and carry the other with you. I also found it very useful when I wanted to have a hot drink. It was a large wooden one and I would put them outside on the carpet on either side of the pen and I sat in the playpen and drank my coffee

Bobbieiris · 14/05/2025 07:40

Thanks everyone! I will be with the girls most of the time so they won’t need to constantly be in a playpen but I’m worried that I’ll never manage housework/cooking/having a shower without one! Of course I’ll baby proof the house but having somewhere safe I can pop them in for a bit will make life easier.
@MathsMagpie that foldable one looks brilliant!!
unfortunately the physio at neonatals said not to use jumparoos, which I was gutted about as they look so fun!

@334bu yes I was wondering if twins might find a way to escape!! Maybe I’ll be using it more for myself too!

We had a babydan playpen with lots of extra sections which our friends with triplets passed on to us.
The standard size is hexagonal but our friends had bought extra panels so it was huge and made the whole end of our through reception room into a fenced in area. It was brilliant and sanity saving. My now grown up twins jokingly refer to it as their prison Smile

Jumperoos are absolutely fine if they aren't left in them all day, it's the same with most 'baby containers' including bouncers, playpens etc.

I'd put mine in for about 30 minutes a day, give or take and they are absolutely fine. One of my twins even walked at 9 months.

Bobbieiris · 14/05/2025 13:32

@SouthLondonMum22 they were premature by quite a few weeks so I think just for their development maybe. But I couldn’t have coped without baby bouncers, those things are a life saver!

I got this one. Pops up and down so easy and comes with a bag. Game changer for me

Oh yeah, maybe. Mine were born at 38 weeks so pretty much full term. Sounds like they are doing really well despite being preemies!
