At my wits end please help!!!

no one else to blame except myself but DS has always contact napped on me since coming home from the hospital. He is now 8 months old.

we co sleep because he refuses to go down in his cot or next to me when he did fit in it!

I have done everything you can imagine! ( the only good thing is he may nap in the pram when we are out and about)

I have done controversial I know, controlled crying but he gets SO worked up and flings himself around in the cot it’s not safe to continue.

I have also done the pick up put down every time he cries which does not work

tjere is no way I can put him down ‘ sleepy but awake ‘ , he has fallen asleep in my arms , completely gone and I will transfer him to the cot but he will wake instantly ( on the off chance he doesn’t he will wake within 20 mins max )

he has a pitch black room, bite noise machine, sleep bag, dummy ….

i don’t know what else to do !!! I know this stage will not last forever but I really need to establish some sort of sleep routine before I return to work and would love to be able to get some bits done whilst my eldest is at school & he naps but it just seems impossible!!

please help xx

Why don't you want to bed share?

user276 · 11/05/2025 02:00

@hhtddbkoygv he is getting to the point now where I can’t leave him in the room by himself it’s just not safe ( at night is ok but during the day is just not possible )

Not safe in what respect? As in you think he could fall?

My DD was like this, I never got her to sleep in a cot. We had a floor mattress with a play pen around it, large enough for me to co-sleep with her. I sometimes slept in my own bed so needed the play pen to be sure she was safe.

Get a floor bed with guards. He might just need space. Mine was in a bed at 9 months for similar reasons

@hhtddbkoygvhe is starting to crawl so wouldn’t want to bed share

@Devilsmommy@Oatsamazing I’ll look into a floor bed thank you! But with a floor bed can they put themselves to sleep eventually, I think my little one would just keep moving? I think if we had a floor bed I would still have to hold him until he is fast asleep and then transfer him onto it

With mine at first I still held him until fast asleep then just gradually left him to himself. He'd roll around chatting to himself and finally settled. The way I saw it as long as he wasn't crying and screaming he could roll around until he knackered himself out, which he did 😂

I've bed shared for 7 years and never had any falls. We have some bed rails and the next2me is pushed up adjacent to one side.

we bed shared for 12 months with first child and 14 months with 2nd.

I went back to work at 10mo and 5mo. Co sleeping saved my sanity. As the kids both needed more time with me and co sleeping helped with that.

At 12mo and 14o we moved them into their own low double bed with a toddler guard.

At bedtime one of us would get into their bed, read to them and sing songs and then leave. First child would wave us away, which you can imagine after 12 months of co sleeping was quite a shift!!!!

both slept in their own bed from then on.

in fact DC1 seemed unaware he could get out and come to us. So didn’t for the first 6 months!!!!!
dC2 was a little older so more aware of what she could do.

id highly recommend their own double bed. Made a huge difference to us. And one of us could get In there to help settle them if needed

Hi, my daughter was the same, Google side car cot. We adapted our cot so that it was next to my side of the bed at the same height, then we all had space!
she stayed with us until she was 2, and now we have a single mattress on the floor next to her toddler bed.
she never liked being enclosed in the cot, and just likes comfort. It won’t last forever x
