Help! 2 (F) smearing poo on self

Title says it all really.
DD has been smearing the contents of her nappy on herself and her bedroom when ever she's put down to nap or even at night.

First time she's done it at night tonight: she was put down as normal at 6 30 after bath, stories and kisses. Checked on her at 8 and she asleep, in bed, poo everywhere. On her draws, her fluffies, her books, all on her thighs and her nose and her hands.

It's been three days now, and she's done it every single nap time when she's been left alone in her room.

I have no idea what to do. I've been very calm.reacting, changed her, put her in the bath, cleaned all the affected items etc.

Her favourite bunny has never been so clean lol. It's been in the wash 3X in three days.

Any advice/ hopeful stories/ mums in the same position?

No advice but replying to bump this for you.

Sounds extremely tough to know how to respond! Could you sort of lurk and see if you can get to her before she gets very far, then talk to her about it? She might just be exploring an interesting texture/seeing what happens or it might be something else. Have you talked to her during the day about it? Interesting that she is presumably managing to hold poo until naps/bedtime - if it continued I think I’d go to GP and ask for referral to child continence team in case there was a constipation issue, this is very common even if poo is soft. In terms of practical ideas, there was another mum on here whose DD was resisting bedtime by taking off nappy and weeing on the bed and I think one thing she tried was a onesie pj on backwards so she can’t unzip/get hands into nappy, might be worth a try?

Time to potty train, get her in the habit of going to the toilet before bed.

I had this with my DD at the same age ,it was bloody awful. I did a lot of reading and something I read suggested if they're smearing when put down for sleep maybe it's a way of avoiding the sensory deprivation of a dark room alone, so I tried engaging in some high sensory input activities before nap time. She was actually ready to drop the nap very soon after this started, does your little one definitely still need the nap?

Gamergirl86 · 10/05/2025 21:23

Thank you for replying-

Potty training is on the horizon definitely. She doesn't drink enough, I've already flagged that so perhaps constipation is an option? I hadn't thought about that.
I have talked to her about it in the day, she keeps saying 'stinky' which is not a word we use as a family so not sure where she's heard that or even able to connect the two?

Ah. Thank you for sharing. Yep. This sounds just like our situation. Maybe I need her to nap more than she needs it 🙈

I definitely remember that feeling!! Just as a heads up, my DD is very likely to be diagnosed as autistic soon age 4.5. Smearing by itself is one tiny hint in that direction and for us there are lots and lots of other signs, no idea if it might be relevant to you but wanted to mention it just in case.

Would wearing a vest with poppers help?

YoungSoak · 10/05/2025 22:11

Could you put her down for a nap in something like a onesie that’s put on backwards so the zip at the back so she can’t get it off? Or a sleeping bag zipped backwards? That way if she poos during the nape she might call for you to change her when she realises she can’t take her clothes off to smear

Hope you find something that helps. It does indeed sound stinky!
