ds1

he turned 3yo on saturday

this is day 2 of pants

so far we have managed a couple of wees on the loo when i have caught him at the right time, but mostly he just goes in his pants, then tells me

only 1 poo - in pants

he really really doesn't want to sit on the potty, and i have to do really good distraction work to get him on the loo

often he will say there's nothing there, but 1 minute later will wee in his pants

he's supposed to be in nursery tomorrow

i don't want to give up, but i'm not sure what's going to change if he doesn't want to be out of nappies

help!

He'll do it in his own time.
The more of a deal you make it, the more he'll want to dig his heels in (if he's anything like my DS).

Give it a rest for a few weeks.

Sod the nursery.

cece · 19/05/2008 13:38

TBH I would leave it till he is more ready, you are just causing you and him? stress.

AitchTwoCiao · 19/05/2008 13:39

i'm trying with dd at the moment, tuts. the nursery advised us to have her in skirts and socks or shorts and socks, as they need the visual of seeing the pee run down their legs to up the ick factor. i bet he's in shorts already, isn't he?

oh, and dd won't sit on the potty. i bought her a padded thing for the loo seat (which she iwll tolerate with a comic a la her parents) but really she just likes getting held on the loo, with the constant jeopardy of falling in.

oh yes, but as the others say, ditch it if he's battling it. dd is ready imo. but if she's not cracked it in a week she's back in nappies.

tigana · 19/05/2008 13:40

The times when he has managed to pee in potty/toilet - have you made the worlds biggest fuss about it? You know, potty-dances and applause and all that jazz?

OrmIrian · 19/05/2008 13:41

He clearly isn't ready no matter who says otherwise. No child likes having wet pants on a regular basis and he isn't going to wee in them if he can help it. I tried several times with DS#2 - just sat him on the potty to see if he did something as opposed to him sitting there doing nowt and then getting up and weeing all over the floor . And once he'd managed that (and been praised) we moved on to pants. And it was overnight. Literally. No accidents day or nighttime. He was about 3 and a half. DD was 3 and same experience as DS#2. DS#1 was 2 and I forced the issue and it was a total nightmare - still had issues many years later TBH.

Yes, when they said "oooh he is ready" was that code for "oooh he is 3 and I think he shoudl be potty trained by now"?

misselizabethbennett · 19/05/2008 13:43

I once heard that children are physically ready for potty training at the same time as they can walk upstairs with alternative legs. Not sure how true this is, but I remember using this as a guide for my DS.

Tutter · 19/05/2008 13:52

he's been walking up stairs with alternate legs for at least a year

am close to sticking a napy back on

i asked him and he said yes please

AitchTwoCiao · 19/05/2008 13:55

capricious little sod darling.

erm, what to do?

tigana · 19/05/2008 14:02

No nappy, no pants, stay at home with potty no further than 5 feet away at all times?

Tutter · 19/05/2008 15:41

nappy back on

[fed up]

[exhausted]
