Why won't my daughter stop crying?????

Please help - my 3 1/2 month old DD has been crying on and off all morning (since about 7am)and I can't work out what's wrong. She isn't hungry, doesn't have a temperature, has had a nap, has a clean nappy, doesn't want a dummy, isn't too hot or cold - what else can it be??? She is never normally like this, and I have been awake since 3am (she went back to sleep around 4am, I couldn't sleep), and am struggling to cope. Can't even go out with her in buggy as haven't managed to get washed and dressed yet as she won't let me put her down for long enough (she is in her bouncy chair at the moment, and seems ok for a few minutes then screams for no reason, then calms down again).

Have you tried taking her out in the garden for a wander round?

RubySlippers · 19/05/2008 09:42

teething?

meep · 19/05/2008 09:45

could be teething - my dd's drool/handchewing started when she was about 3mo (though she is now 10mo and still doesn't have teeth )

Would you be happy giving her some Calpol to see if it helps?

Or try her with some more milk - she might surprise you!

I was wondering about teething - she has been doing the hand-chewing/drooling bit for weeks now, but I have given her a teether and she rejects it - any way to tell if the teeth are causing her pain?

Have tried feeding her - she screams louder as soon as I try latching her on (am bf).

Don't have a garden (live in a flat), so can't go out till I can manage to get dressed.

I'd give her some calpol - sounds like her teeth are moving at least, if not breaking the gums yet.

Hope she settles soon - poor thing.

If you can, get some Bonjela or Calgel and put it on her gums too - it numbs them so may calm her so she can eat later on

saggers · 19/05/2008 09:54

I'd try some calpol, just in case, although when my DDs were teething, they wanted to bf all the time. I'd put her where she can see you, and get yourself washed and dressed and try and ignore(?!) the crying for a few minutes... then you can just take her out and see if a change of scene does the trick. Good luck.

KelaH · 19/05/2008 10:03

Thanks all - she is sleeping now - tried feeding again (had been trying every half hour or so in case she changed her mind!), and she took it and fed herself to sleep. Will now put her down, get dressed and go out to buy some bonjela!

get some teething powders too - it works wonders for some babies (mine just likes the taste but it doesn't seem to stop the drool!)

KelaH · 19/05/2008 10:45

Sorry to seem ignorant, but what are teething powders?

OP posts:
RubySlippers · 19/05/2008 10:50

they are ashton and parsons teething powders

you can get them from most chemists

i have NO idea what is in them, but they seem to work (all herbal stuff IIRC)

meep · 19/05/2008 10:54

they are little packets of white powder - babies love them

There are some Boots own ones and also Nelson Teetha powders - all good and all loved by dd - she opens her wee mouth for me to ti[p the powder in now!

I think the A&P ones are the best value though

christywhisty · 19/05/2008 11:03

My son used to be like this before a developmental milestone. It was a sense of frustration I think.

KelaH · 19/05/2008 11:05

Ah, that's interesting - she keeps trying to sit up and seems a bit frustrated that she can't.

KelaH
My son - 5 months has been the same for the past few weeks. He is desperate to sit and is getting fed up - also rolling and then wanting to crawl. His teeth are at him too. Just given him some of those Ashton powders and he is having a nap...think its alot of things going on at once - no what you mean about trying to get dressed and out

firststeps · 19/05/2008 13:16

Hi KelaH, could she have an ear infection - these can be very painful for babies?

KelaH · 19/05/2008 14:45

Don't think so, she hasn't been pulling at her ear etc.

She has slept a lot and seems a bit more settled now, thank everyone for your help.

Hi KelaH. My DD is the same age and has a thing for sitting up. After a while in her chair or on the floor she gets very grizzly and the only thing that makes her happy is to sit on my knee. I think she likes feeling a part of things and being able to see what's going on.

Highlander · 24/05/2008 14:53

it's just the way some babies are - she wants to be with you, it's totally normal. Get a baby carrier and go about your life. The absolute worst thing you can do is abandon her - just makes her more clingy.

IwantYourNickname · 24/05/2008 18:02

how about your let-down reflex? maybe its too strong and she can't cope with it. anyother (or all) of the abovementioned ideas are also possible...i think i also went through that all of them at once!
