Just found out I’m pregnant and due in January! What’s your experience of looking after your newborn in the winter months especially January? I have an August baby myself so I feel this will be totally different
also do you find people often forget their birthdays because of the month people usually broke after Xmas lol

January birthdays are rubbish of course.

Not sure what you mean about the newborn in Winter part. Not really a problem? Just put clothes on the baby to reflect the temperature like you would in the summer

January is tough for birthday celebrations, most people are hibernating! You can obviously make it special with your family though.

I also have an august baby and a winter baby and I can't say I thought about it too much! Might have marginally preferred winter actually as we could stay in and be cosy, and then just when the baby was starting to wake up to the world it was Spring - I liked it. I used a merino wool long sleeved vest from dilling as a base layer, just had the one for outings as they're like £25 and a nice warm snow suit type thing!

I did struggle amusing the toddler through the winter months though honestly!!

Positives - you can buy their birthday presents in the Christmas sales and they’ll have a great turnout for their school birthday parties as nobody has anything else to do and the weather is generally rubbish. I didn’t plan it but I actually love that my DD’s birthday is in January as it brightens an otherwise miserable month.

Cerialkiller · 05/05/2025 15:30

Tbh it was fine as the first 4-8 weeks I was recovering and getting used to new baby. Both my kids are late Jan/early Feb so did this twice.

It was nice that just as I was starting to feel ready to venture out, the weather started improving.

It's true that early January birthdays can be difficult. (Close family member born on the 4th) As no one has any money or party energy left.

Late/mid Jan is fine, though you have to find in door stuff to do. It's probably more expensive to do parties as there just no way do it outside.

A newborn in the winter months is so lovely. Snuggling up beside the fire together and watching binge-worthy series while they feed and nap.
That's only the case with a first baby, though.

Birthdays always cold and close to Xmas but otherwise no different

Babygirlmamahere · 05/05/2025 15:40

I have a July baby and a winter baby and the main difference was that I felt able to hibernate when winter baby was born and just stay cosy at home for a while whereas it was a heatwave when my summer baby was born so felt like I needed to be out enjoying the summer and doing things!

tsmainsqueeze · 05/05/2025 15:49

I have a January baby ,end of the month .
Full turn out to all their birthdays parties and i can't remember their birthday ever being affected by Christmas being the month before, no one ever forgot.
Dressing them is just another layer or so .
I have an early Dec baby and an August one too.

Londonmummy66 · 05/05/2025 15:52

I have a January and an August. Former never had refusals for birthdays - latter had to wait until September as all their mates were on holiday. The only bummer when they're older is that they have mocks on their birthday.

My youngest DD’s birthday is mid January. It was actually quite nice, Christmas was well and truly over, everything “back to normal”, eldest back in playgroup etc. Spent the first few newborn weeks snuggled in the house then we had the whole spring and summer ahead of us when we were ready to be out and about more.
The trickiest thing was being cold when BFing at night so get some cardigans and shawls you can wrap around yourself.
The baby will be fine going out, get a snowsuit and a blanket in the pram.
You can also get a bit stir crazy in the house with an older child, plan places that are easy to go with a baby and older child, like soft plays and activity groups.
Oh and later January birthdays are not too bad because you can buy presents in the sales!

Glassfullofdreams · 05/05/2025 17:15

Both of my daughters were born in January.

Birthday parties have never been a problem - everyone invited always comes. The only problem I have is thinking of what to get them for their birthdays when Christmas has only just passed.

And you're rude, seemingly.
My DC's birthday is the end of Jan and a bonus is being able to buy some pressies in the January sales.
In terms of having babies in Winter, my twins were born in 2018 and we had heavy snowfall in my area when they were several weeks old (can't remember precisely). Pushing a double pram through that wasn't much fun, but no issues beyond that.
🤷🏼‍♀️

Babyenroute · 05/05/2025 17:26

My baby was born early January and it was brilliant as we hibernated/ fed and no worries about a newborn overheating in a heat wave. It was lovely to have something after Christmas to look forward to

ThisCatCanHop · 05/05/2025 17:57

I have January and summer babies! The advantage of a January baby is the ability to cocoon, and it felt as though spring was really starting at the point where we emerged from the newborn first six weeks or so. Also, my January baby was much more ready to start school than my summer-born, though being a second child may have helped.

Downside is lots more layers and faffing getting them in and out of car seats and buggies! And no summer garden parties for birthdays - we’re now at the stage of actual parties and have had to go down the paid venue route as the weather just isn’t conducive to alternatives.

I find it frustrating having to cram all present ideas into a 3 week period - but I think that’s true of any birthday between November and January.

Bunny2006 · 05/05/2025 18:49

My only daughter was born end of January, no issues having a newborn we still went out in the pram or sling just appropriate layers. Baby groups, cafes, library groups etc all indoors.
Birthday doesn't get forgotten and I enjoy buying the presents in the sales and just share between Christmas and birthday, we went to the zoo for her 1st birthday and Blackpool for her 2nd to visit a sea life centre and gruffalo themed soft play so still can make a day out of it even in winter
Congratulations!
