Mumsnet got me through the darkest moments when my DS caught meningitis at 4 weeks old and I'm back asking for another handhold as I currently hold him on my lap sleeping in hospital with suspected sepsis 😢

He has been unwell with a temperature since Friday- but today he was really unhappy and despite a 39 temp his hands and feet looked blue and were cold. I took him to our children's urgent care this afternoon who looked in his ears and chest and said double infection and prescribed antibiotics.

Put him to bed with a temp of 38.9 and some Nurofen at 7:30pm. 9:30pm he wakes roaring in pain, and when I pick him up he is freezing. Took his temp in both ears and it was 34.5. Mottled skin on tummy and inconsolable alongside sucking in of chest. I called 111 who said take straight back to A&E as I could get him there quicker than an ambulance. Bloods done extremely quick and sepsis pathway was started straight away based on the blood gas results.

We were then blue lighted about 12am to the children's hospital- he has been put on iv antibiotics and fluids and bloods show raised infection markers so it's now a case of finding where the infection is.

I'm so frightened- I've never seen him this way; he has never ever screamed solidly for 4 hours like that, and being back here is bringing everything back from his meningitis days here.

Please could anyone share some positive stories or even just let me know what they're up to in these wee hours to keep me afloat and give me something else to think about? 💙

I hope everything is ok ❤️

Paeds nurse here. I agree that that is a viral rash. I’d also think a temperature of 35.4 is probably because the thermometer is not in the right place.

A rash caused by meningitis looks completely different.

How is he today @miniworry?

miniworry · 07/05/2025 13:01

Thank you so much everyone for all your help and support over the last 3 days, honestly some of these messages got me through the dark of those first 24 hours.

The rash is still there but still blanchjng and I agree @Toddlerteaplease it looks totally different from the classic meningitis rash. I think the trouble was when he had meningitis at 4 weeks old he didn't even have a rash!!

Even though his temp was in the high 35s most of the night he felt warm on his chest and back so I wasn't too worried, unlike Sunday when he was just freezing and all his skin was mottled.

He seems to be slightly brighter today - hasn't eaten a lot but he's spent the morning taking a whole cucumber everywhere (including into his little tykes car) with him and occasionally eating bits so I'm just trying to make sure he's hydrated. I'm still in awe of how quickly a baby can deteriorate yet how quickly they can bounce back too.

Will keep on top of the antibiotics for the next 5 days and then praying it's all a distant memory soon.

From the bottom of my heart thank you again for those messages on Sunday night when I was just paralysed with fear. 🩷

My DD had meningitis at age 3 and she also got a second rash on top of the meningitis "rash" all over her body. We were in hospital throughout and nobody really took much notice of the second rash. She also found the iv antibiotics going in uncomfortable.
I hope all is calmer for you now and you all catch up on your sleep.

DailyEnergyCrisis · 07/05/2025 21:07

Glad he’s doing so much better. It really does look like viral rash- something like roseola.
The stable temp, reducing CRP and general presentation (playing, alert) is great and indicates that discharge is reasonable. They bounce back so quickly but convalesce much better in their own bed. Well done for weathering the storm xx

OP I've just come across this thread, how are you all now? Xx

miniworry · 31/05/2025 11:17

@Justanothermum9421 we are great thank you! We were discharged after 3 days and little one bounced back so quickly- totally unbothered by it all- me on the other hand! He's currently climbing under the stair gate to bound the stairs!
