It's ds's birthday soon and I'm slightly at a loss. I don't want to spend much - I'm going to give him a couple of the things that his sister used to have (walker, mega blocks) and he clearly won't care if he doesn't get anything at all, bless his little cotton socks, but I'd like to buy him something small, as long as it isn't going to disappear into the tidal wave of plastic tat that threatens to overwhelm us regularly despite the fact I cull it every couple of weeks. Ideally something that his sister won't run off with, as well...she operates on the "what's mine is mine and what's his is mine" principle. He'll get books from all the relatives, it's what they do, and in any case we must already own almost every book ever written for small children.

Inspiration, please?

Really lovely piggy bank with a few coins in he can top up himself as he gets older. Sure big sis will not want to share this.

Going on from the lovely seeds idea, what about a tree? We have bought one before as a christening present, you can put it in a pot at the beginning and watch it grow with him...

my big brother had an apple tree that was 'his' in my nana and grandads back garden. i was always jealous of that tree...

Not quite what you've requested but you could do a great big box filled with balloons. Each balloon should have a sweet or toy car or party bag filler inside. Its great for getting good photos.

Really cheap and his sister could get to join in with some of the popping to get the bits out. You also wont have much volume left afterwards.
