If their day fell on a bank holiday, would they still look after your children?

They would if I asked, but I wouldn't ask.

nahthatsnotforme · 28/04/2025 16:35

Do you need them to ?

Chewbecca · 28/04/2025 16:38

If you were working, yes, not if not.

They do as long as I'm working or sick, if I'm well I take care of my child.

However, my mom helps me care for my baby when I want to go out with friends and DH is working.

If you need to do something that holiday, just ask.

Powderblue1 · 28/04/2025 16:43

No because I wouldn’t be working. It if I was I’d double check and they likely would

CuriousMoe · 28/04/2025 16:47

We keep ours at home on bank holidays. I am sure if we asked they would take him, but unless we really needed help i.e. were working/ had a wedding I would feel we were taking the mick.

Rocknrollstar · 28/04/2025 17:06

Definitely not. They would be at home with me.

FiveWhatByFiveWhat · 28/04/2025 18:15

No because I'd be off work on bank holidays (DH works them though) so I'd look after him.

cramptramp · 28/04/2025 18:19

I wouldn’t because they wouldn’t be at work and wouldn’t need me to.

DenholmElliot11 · 28/04/2025 18:20

I wouldn't dream of asking them to be honest.

I'd enjoy the additional holiday with my kids.

Shinyandnew1 · 28/04/2025 18:22

No, because I don't work bank holidays.

Do you? I feel like that would have been useful information to include in your OP.

ginasevern · 28/04/2025 18:32

More context needed. Do you want or need to do something without kids on the bank holiday? If not, then the answer is obviously "no". If you're lucky enough to have parents or ILs that graciously provide this service then don't take the piss.

Mumof1andacat · 28/04/2025 18:45

My mum had my son every Monday but it it was a bank holiday then he didn't go there. I don't work bank holidays so I was off work

This. My mum would do it if I asked but I wouldn’t expect her to do it on a bank holiday so I can have a child free day. If anything, I see it as a chance for her to have a break.

CaptainJason · 28/04/2025 19:23

Mine have mine on a Monday and also don’t have them on bank holidays; they would if I asked but like others, I wouldn’t ask!

Just curious as a lot of people I know seem to still send theirs on bank holidays despite not working themselves, although I suspect this might be because the parents then get a chance to be off without their children, and the grandparents are retired so are “off” the rest of the week.

CaptainJason · 28/04/2025 19:28

(For context, I am a SAHM and my in laws were desperate to have my eldest a day a week when my youngest was born to give me some one on one time with DD2, so I would never expect them to “work” a bank holiday, nor do I ever expect them to have her at all!)

HallsideNC · 28/04/2025 19:31

Yes. Always 😂 DH and I tend then not to take the bank holidays and that lets us keep holidays for days in longer school holidays that we don’t have grandparents available for. They also take them the night before as that saves anyone getting up early to do a pick up or drop off

Autumn38 · 28/04/2025 21:55

I think it’s probably also a lot of grandparents like having the time with their grandchildren - it’s not purely about providing a service to their children - so they are still happy to have the grands on a a BH to spend time with them.

BlondiePortz · 28/04/2025 21:58

I wouldn't want them too they have their own lives too
