Chicken pox vaccine, would you do it?

Just wanting to get general opinions on the chicken pox vaccine. If any children have had it, was there any side effects? We have no particular reasons to get it, but I worry about my daughter being poorly and having scars etc, potentially ruining holidays and flying and that sort of thing. Just normal concerns about chicken pox I suppose.

thank you x

DD 2 has it now and it’s awful, I wish we’d vaccinated her. She’s pretty cheery and it’s mild but she’s still suffering. We don’t know whether DS 6 has had it – he was sent home from nursery during an outbreak once with one spot behind his ear, but it never materialised. If he hasn’t caught it from DD we’ll vaccinate him now for belt and braces. Horrible disease.

Sending a massive thank you to the OP for starting this thread. Also thanks to those who commented about my 11 year old. I’ve just booked her in for the first dose of vaccine on Saturday. No more head in the sand, it’ll be a relief to not have to worry about her catching it now. Thanks all.

Are you in Scotland or England or wales?

It hasn't been added in any of those places yet.

It being added in January when the changes to the HiB/MenC and MMR vaccine ages take place is still in discussions.

There have been shortages of it recently in some places so that could be why an announcement hasn't been made yet.

Just popping back on to say that my 11yr old had her vaccine on Saturday. Apart from an achy arm she is showing no side effects. She should now have approx 90% immunity. The second jab in six weeks will boost her up to 95%. I’m happy with that. Thanks again to the OP for starting this thread.

I’d never thought about it until ds1 caught it and passed it to ds2 (5 months old and completely breastfed). Apparently breast milk passes antibodies to infant! In this case any antibodies did fuck all and my baby was covered in spits and at risk of encephalitis! Having the virus damaged his milk teeth and he had shingles at 11 years of age.

I resolved to get ds3 vaccinated but he caught it before I could. Fortunately he wasn’t too poorly.
