So we are meant to do a UK break for 2 nights tomorrow but 18 month old has a temperature of 39 with a runny nose.

Tempted to still go, pack lots of calpol. For context, it is a couple of hours drive.

Or is it better to stay home?

Advice please!

Just go. Calpol and they will probably be better in a few hours.

Thank you! I hope so. Gave calpol earlier and temp did come down. And have just given now again before bed as it went up again when it wore off.

Countryside air probably good!

Deff go! If you don’t do anything when a toddler has a runny nose, you’ll never do anything.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 18/04/2025 20:43

Just go. Once the Calpol hits, they’ll be fine.

Hyperquiet · 18/04/2025 20:46

Thanks everyone. Feel more confident in my decision to go considering the high temp! Armed with bags of calpol of course. 😅

I would go against the other advice here and say stay at home. When mine has a fever it’s usually 4-5 days of misery and terrible sleep. She also had a febrile convulsion on the first night of one of the fevers which was the scariest experience of my life and she hadn’t seemed that bad at bed time. Even without this I would rather be at home when shes sick. Just a cold would be fine of course although if bad enough to result in no sleep I wouldn’t be keen to be away.

Has your little one had similar illnesses before? You might have a sense of how this one will turn out. Not all children are affected by illnesses in the same way.

Edited

So he has had fevers before and I think it just depends on the bug he has. Sometimes it has been awful and sometimes manageable. He seemed happy enough playing today and eating etc.

In terms of sleep last night (didnt have a temp at this point) we had an awful hour but the rest of the night was fine thankfully.

Having said that he is up chatting away at the moment.

Will see how tonight goes but the trip away may be trickier as we will be in the same room so will disturb eachother more.

As you’re in the UK I think I’d still go as long as there’ll be a walk in centre nearby in case your little one takes a turn for the worse. If he’s happy enough in himself then a change of scene might be nice for you all.

Thank you. Will look up walk in centres actually.

We have had a bad night in terms of lack of sleep (not crying just babbling) so I am on about 3 hours!

Hoping that doesn't continue over the course of the trip!

Hope things get better soon. Have you tired ipuprofen if needed? Yes to the walk in centre research.

Thank you! Yes did think of ibuprofen I shouldve given thst actually. But thankfully it has been 4 hours since the last dose of calpol and we are at just over 37 degrees now so not too bad!

Just pull over and get it out. The quicker you get on top of it the better.
