Carer's Allowance question......

I have been getting carer's allowance for my son for the last 5/6 years. He has severeve and profound leaning difficulties. I am registered blind and get DLA, as does my son.

Apparentl, my elder son can't claim carer's for me because ou can't care AND be cared for.

My son's needs are physical, mine are of the preparing meal nature, my elder boy, (god love him!) does all my cooking and reading things.

Is this right?

I'm not sure if that is correct, I thought (for example) elderly couples can claim CA for looking after each other?

i think that is right as if you are a carer your classed as being able so cannot be caring for someone if being cared for yourself

your son woulod have to have carers allowance for both of you abd you would lose your allwance as you would be classed as unable to care if you have a carer yourself

ive just spotted couples can claim for each other so maybe you can get it you could just phone them and ask

no it's wrong you can be cared for and a carer yourself.
what you can't do bubblagirl, is care for more than 1 person at a time (of course you can but you can't claim CA for more than 1).

how old is your older ds?

Are you in contact with your local social services dept Manx?

our SS dept arranged for a Benefits Rights Advisor to visit me, he knew all about what I could apply for, and helped fill in the forms to get me the maximum benefits.

If you have a social worker, ask them to arrange it, if you don't, ring the local council and ask them about a Benefits Rights Advisor.

You should also ask if you would be eligible for Direct Payments to help you pay a 'personal assistant' to come and help with cooking, household chores etc.

yes id already wrote i was wrong above your post i spotted that couples can care for each other so realised you can be a carer and care yourself

carer has to be 16 or over

its ok all new to me im just going through this myself with ds so still reading up read wrong first time

Just asking the age of ds as if he is under 16 he can't claim or in full time education (or earning more than 90 odd quid a week) so he may not fall in the right bracket.
