What did you buy in preparation for having a baby that was wasted?

For example a cot because they slept in your bed in the end.

Too many clothes, we didn't bother to change her outfit unless she dribbled a lot or had a poo explosion when she was really little.
She slept in a moses basket but then ended up in our bed because she refused the next to me cot + travel cot.
But the big cot was great against our bed with the side off as a giant next to me, so that I wasn't always hanging off the edge of my bed and unable to sleep when cosleeping.
That being said I wouldn't call the next to me/travel cots a waste as I was hoping that she'd sleep in a cot and not need to cosleep, but we didn't sleep train so that was probably unrealistic. Not many kids sleep in their own cot/room without sleep training from what I've seen.
We bought carriers second hand and I'm glad we did because she hated the baby bjorn one so we ended up going with the ergo baby.
I used a normal backpack rather than a changing a bag.
Mostly I think what you need depends on the temperament of your baby, so don't overbuy or buy cheap second hand to trial without losing out on too much money if it ends up not being used/needed and then hopefully you can afford to buy something else that might be useful.
We had a changing table that we sold pretty quickly, I thought it would be better for my back but actually it was more efficient to have changing stuff in the living room + our bedroom, we never went to the nursery to change her.

I think the only thing that wasn't really used much was baby k'tan - I made a rookie error in buying pre-pregnancy size (the optimism!) and I'd had horrific wrist pain so maneuvering baby in and out of an already rather tight wrap was difficult. Baby also hated Baby Bjorn carrier. Had much more success with an Ergobaby which she is happy to use.

Nothing. We only bought what we needed, when we needed it.
We borrowed everything else!

Break it down to what babies need.

They need clean bums, kept warm, somewhere to sleep and their bellies full.

Everything else is either your personal preference or their preference.

get the above sorted prior to baby arriving then play it by ear. Everything else can be picked up from the shop, market place or delivered the next day.

Expensive travel system (that we ended up calling 'the tank'), DC hated being in it and they both spent most of the first 6 or so months in an ergobaby sling when we were out and about. It took up so much space and was heavy and unwieldy. We then swapped to a Silvercross stroller at 6 months and just used that from then on. Luckily my brother in law and his partner had a baby and we palmed the travel system off on them.

Also the moby wrap cloth sling was just too much faff and I don't feel like we knew how to use it safely despite watching many youtube tutorials how to put it on. We ended up co-sleeping, so the stokke cot we bought was a waste too luckily that was second hand and we were able to sell it for the same price we bought it for.

Another thing that was a massive waste of money was baby swimming lessons that I did with DC1, neither of us enjoyed it, but as it was so pricey I made us both suffer through them :(

Edited to add that cloth nappies were wasted too, despite my best intentions having a winter baby meant that they just weren't practical. We bought a whole set so they were not cheap, but we did end up donating them to a baby charity so I didn't feel too bad about that waste of money.
