Toddler Fasting for General Anaesthetic

Looking for some advice on fasting for DS 22 months.

He has his procedure at 9.15am tomorrow and we were told no food after 2.30am.

My question is, should I let him sleep as normal or wake him up to eat something at 2am? I don’t want him to be extremely hungry tomorrow but also run the risk of him not going back to sleep if I wake him and I want him to be rested. He had dinner around 7pm. He’s still awake, would it be enough to give him a snack down before he goes down for the night?

I can breastfeed him until 4.30am and he can have water until 6.30am.

Wondering what others have done, thanks!

Snack before bed; don't wake him up at 2am.

No, don’t wake him to eat at 2am. Honestly. The procedure is first thing in the morning, he’s not to fade away through hunger.

I didn't wake up DD2 when she had surgery at age 2 especially if he is still breastfeeding you could offer a dream feed before 0430 if you want to, but if he would wake if you did that leave him. Just have lots of distractions for the morning and hide any food and drink from him. The play area where you wait also helps distract them. Make sure you take a phone/tablet charger and maybe download some favourite cartoons onto your device just in case the hospital WiFi is terrible.

Thanks everyone! Waking him up to eat at 2am would have been a disaster but being overwhelmed about the whole thing meant my logical thinking has checked out 😂 gave him a late snack before bed and we’ve been awake since 4.30 since I stopped breastfeeding (it’s the only way I get him back to sleep at night). I suspect he’ll sleep in the car when we leave for the hospital in an hour though so hopefully he won’t be too exhausted! Thanks for the advice x

I felt for you. Hope the procedure went smoothly today.
