Child bit in baby room

Child bit my one year old on the face in nursery

Really big red dark marks even when I picked my child up several hours later.

The child must have bit him really hard. :(

Bit of broken skin and tiny dot of blood but they said it didnt bleed to their knowledge so can't have been a lot.

What do I need to do? Trip to GP warranted due to broken skin or what do I put on it?

Up to date on all vaccines and also currently on antibiotics for a bad cough that hasn't gone for weeks if at all relevant.

I would use an ice-pack. They will probably be unsettled and may want more cuddles.

Nursery said they put an ice pack straight after. Yes he did. I was so shocked when I saw how dark and big the marks are.

Photo, time and date. Call 111 as a potential non medical call and for reassurance.
It's what they say they are for.
Plus lots of cuddles.

So i have taken a photo. What is the photo, time and date for? My own records?

My 2yr old was bitten on the arm recently, big teeth marks and a bruise and it went down in a day or two. Though there wasn't broken skin

kidditsonyou · 08/04/2025 22:31

They’ll be absolutely fine, the gp won’t do anything so waste of time. I have two 11 months apart who bit each other all the time at that age, it always healed with in a couple of days.

niclw · 08/04/2025 22:31

At the first nursery my child went to my child was bitten frequently over the space of 9 weeks. Your son should be ok. However, please make sure that the nursery are on this to try and reduce the chances of this happening again. Unfortunately the nursery my child went to was awful at dealing with anything. He only stayed there for 9 weeks.

Horrible when it happens. Makes me nervous it is going to happen again! Glad it went down in a couple of days, hoping this will be the same.

Thanks so much. What a horrible experience. It must have been so unsettling switching nurseries too.

How do I make sure they are on it? I'm not quite sure what to expect from them or how to approach it.

The nursery should have given you an accident form, detailing what happened.
when you next drop off, ask to speak to your child’s key worker.
Have them explain to you how they intend to make sure it doesn’t happen again, they should respond with close monitoring, both of your child and the biter.
Some children do unfortunately go through a biting phase, it does tend to phase out quite quickly.

Hopefully it will heal soon here too

Thank you. Yes i did sign a form. They said they'd keep the children apart when I asked them to keep them apart. I also asked them to keep an extra eye and they said they would.

That’s good then, they have followed procedure.
Trust me they should be vigilant from now on, it’s awful when a child in your care is bit by another one, I’m a childminder of 12 years, it’s not happened often but it’s a terrible incident when it does happen, and they will do their utmost to prevent it happening again!

SouthLondonMum22 · 08/04/2025 23:16

Just keep an eye on it, it should start looking better in a few days. It's just one of those things in the baby rooms unfortunately but now that it's happened, they will keep an eye out and hopefully it won't happen by the same child again.

Edited

It's good to know they will hopefully take it seriously.

The child has bitten another child before several weeks ago.

Hopefully thanks.

As the same child bit another child some weeks ago I was a bit concerned that they weren't vigilant about it but maybe they thought the first incident was a one off. Hopefully they will be now.

They can be so quick too but you are right, they definitely need to be more vigilant now.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 08/04/2025 23:57

Same with my 2 year old last week he's old enough to tell me who did it

Ask the r nursery nurse to keep your baby away from the biter

Yeah unfortunately it happens. Your kid will be fine. These things can happen in a split second so they can’t be on it as it can happen. Nothing to do with- GP can’t do anything so please don’t waste their time.

It was just a question because of the broken skin and blood and risk of infection.

How do you know which child bit yours and that they bit another child a couple of weeks ago?

kidditsonyou · 09/04/2025 10:46

Your baby will also have lots of broken skin and a lot more blood over the next couple of years.

you don’t need to consider going to the gp unless there’s actually a bad infection.

I didn't say I knew which child bit mine? I did ask if the child had bitten before and they had.
