Nappy for 3 month old help!

Flora0112 · 07/04/2025 09:50

Hello
My DD is 12 weeks old and weighing 12lb but has chubby thighs and bum. She constantly pops her poppers on dungarees. Her waist is small and 0 to 3 month clothes still big on her. But I'm struggling with nappies for her. We have been using Aldi size 2 nappies which say up to 13lb but we noticed that they were tight on her legs and her waist as could see the nappy line. She just has such chubby legs full of rolls. So we bought the size 3 which says is 9 to 18lb. But they are huge on her and would definitely leak as don't fit round legs and to close at waist the straps it's all way round the nappy.
We used lidl nappies as newborn as they were smaller fit as she was only 6lb then moved to aldi for size 2 as this is our normal shop. I have been reading reviews all morning and still non the wiser. Does anyone have any recommendations for nappies for 12lb+ for a smaller baby that won't leak etc. They size for 3 seems to massively jump and all 13lb to 20lb which is huge!
Thanks

We had a similar issue and went with Morrisons for a while (size 2 I think) and Lidl and Tesco. You’ll find all the nappies have different weight suggestions even if they say size 3, so it’s trial and error I’m afraid!

Flora0112 · 07/04/2025 12:06

Yeah I think im going to have to go tesco and buy a few brands. Annoying as some are so expensive compared to aldi and lidl. I saw online pampers size 2 is her age range but £5 for 30 nappies is mad but if that's what I got to get! Reviews are mad too for all nappies.

Oh god bought lidl nappies in size 3 put one on last night and she sleeps through thr night and ong she woke up screaming at 4am and was drenched in wee. We've never had leakage issue with her. We ended up putting a size 2 aldi one back on but they are clearly too small as this morning the tab on side had come off.
Got Tesco ones on her atm but going to see if pampers and that are better

I went onto nappy pants at that age because I got a load for free. Elasticated waist helped as he was smaller and the legs helped trap any wee.
not sure if they do size 2 anymore but you can deffo get them in size 3

Sinkingfeeling952 · 08/04/2025 08:22

Sainsburys were quite good at that age as they have a bit of an elasticated waistband. I had to try a few brands at that stage before settling back to our usual shop brand when my DC got a bit bigger

Yellowbrickroad77 · 08/04/2025 08:35

We switched to pampers with our chubster. It is a lot more expensive but they definitely fit better. Pampers also have a points scheme so if you follow it you get free packs every now and then. You could try and get a trial pack from somewhere and see if they're any good.

We gave up on Aldi after size 3 though, they were great for newborns and then leaked like hell.

DingleB · 08/04/2025 09:18

Our DD is a similar shape, age and weight. We find we have to use Tesco Fred & Flo and Pampers intermittently to avoid leaks. She’s currently in Fred & Flo size 2, when she outgrows these we’ll
move to Pampers size 2 and then back to Fred & Flo size 3. The sizing of one consistent brand just doesn’t work for our DD and we completely ignore the weights on the packaging as they don’t work for our DD either. We tried a few different brands before we found what works for her. If you do go for Pampers, keep an eye out for offers on the big boxes. You can quite often get 3 boxes of 80 nappies for £30 in Boots, Tesco etc.

Flora0112 · 08/04/2025 17:05

Great thank you! We've had fred and flo on today and they seem okay but where pretty full after 3 hours and seems to come more forward and bulge at front so not sure if they'll last the night. And they dont have rhe wetness indicator but seem okay so far. Have ordered some pampers to try tonight too. It would be annoying cause cost but I'd rather pay more than her waking up at 4am screaming and drenched. And will defo shop around for deals etc. ⁷
Me and my OH did think the lidl and aldi bigger sizes felt way more papery and not as good newborn ones.

What also isn't helping me is I keep getting comments from people that she's big for a baby and chubby and ib my mum and baby yoga class some of the babies are older than her and are tiny. So that's been getting me down and someone said to me she shouldn't be in size 2 or 3 nappies as her 8 month is in them. But we had health visitor last week and she's weighing 50th percentile having gone from 25th and she said her rolls are sign of healthy baby but it's still getting me down even though she's still happily in 0 to 3 and lots don't fit her still too big it's just her chubby legs and bum but yeah comments are upsetting me as makes me feel I'm over feeding her.

I think my second shared nappies with her sister who’s a year and a half older at four months (size 4) so don’t let anyone get you down saying she’s big she is obviously thriving!
Some babies are just rollier than others, I think the chubby legs are cute!
Also nappies are so cheap in the UK! £5 for 30 pampers it is 18.00€ where we are in France- you are so lucky! Sorry no help on the brands but just wanted to say don’t feel bad she is a lovely chubby baby just as she should be!

QueenOfWeeds · 08/04/2025 20:09

Could you use pampers overnight but then a cheaper brand during the day and just change a bit more frequently
I agree to nappy costs in the UK - I was amazed when we were in France, even at the cost of the almost identical Aldi ones.

DingleB · 09/04/2025 17:01

How did you get on last night @Flora0112? The Fred & Flo nappies do have a wetness indicator but it’s not particularly sensitive. I agree about the bulging too- not the best look! Pampers are far better and we would use them consistently, despite the price, if the sizing worked out for our little girl.

I’m so sorry that you’ve had such negative comments about your little girl- that’s disgusting and so unnecessary! I think it says more about them than it does about you and your baby, and it really isn’t their place to say what should or shouldn’t be happening with your little girl. You know her best and have her best interests at heart.

I don’t think you can overfeed a baby- my little girl pushes the teat out when she’s had enough, even if she’s only had a couple of ounces!

Yellowbrickroad77 · 09/04/2025 22:08

Just laugh it off. You have a healthy, (mostly)happy baby and that is the only thing that matters.

Your yoga mum sounds like she talks before she speaks because that was a stupid thing to say. Babies are all born different shapes and sizes. She's implying your baby needs to lose weight during the biggest growth spurt of her life. That's crackers. She's crackers.

crunchyspider · 09/04/2025 22:38

We started to use the pampers size 3 pull up at night due to leaking around 3 months and she’s not had a night leak since. Spotted that Tesco do size 3 pull ups so we’ve switched to them as they’re much cheaper than pampers and work just as well! We just use the normal Tesco nappies in the day.

Flora0112 · 10/04/2025 07:07

So first night we tried pampers and no leaks and I feel pampers are a lot softer and cute. We did Tesco last night and no leaks. But I can't see where wetness indicator is and this is ke being weird but I don't think they look as nice. Its a weird green blue pattern.
But my OH would rather pay less for Tesco than pampers cause Tesco worked.

My baby has unfortunately inherited my baby chubby cheeks and thighs. I know she's completely fine bjt it's hard when get constant comments when health visitor said she's perfect and her rolls are exactly what they want to see. She's 13 weeks tomorrow still happily in 0 to 3 clothes so don't know why people have to make comments. I turned into a skinny toddler and HV said when she starts moving she'll loose the rolls. Plus she's classdd as 50th percentile. She's jumped from 25 to 50 but HV didn't seem to care?

Had a bad dY yesterday as we had vaccines and she's still not drinking much so not sure if vaccine or a leap and just classic mat leave of feeling lonely despite going to groups just haven't found my friends yet. So at least no leaky nappies haha

We sometimes did pampers at night and cheaper in the day. Also rate Sainsbury’s nappies

sexnotgenders · 10/04/2025 07:31

But chubby baby cheeks and thighs are adorable!!! What the fuck are people doing judging chubby babies. Has the world gone mad!!! OP, it makes me sad to read your post saying “unfortunately my baby has inherited my baby chub”, and feeling “down” about the size of your baby (I’m paraphrasing, but that’s the tone of your posts). Your baby is growing beautifully and fat shaming a baby so you end up feeling like she’s anything but absolutely beautiful is outrageous. I would end any association with another mum who made me feel like that. You’ll find a lot of competitive mums out there, and it may take a while to find your tribe, so you need to develop more confidence and not absorb other people’s (batshit) opinions. Your daughter needs you to advocate for her and show her how amazing she is - don’t let others ruin that.

For what it’s worth, my second was in size 6 nappies before he turned one. His thighs were marvellous in scale!! He is nearly two now and completely ‘normal’ size. I never gave it any thought. I just brought whatever nappies/clothes that fit

DingleB · 10/04/2025 12:34

@Flora0112I'm glad you’ve had no leaks over the last few nights. Hopefully that means you’ve managed to get some sleep too! The wetness indicator on the Fred & Flo nappies is down the centre, just like with other brands. Quite often the blue only shows in between my daughter’s legs and, like I said previously, it’s no where near as sensitive as other brands. I completely agree about the softness and look of Pampers- I much prefer them for our little girl too.

As other people have said, there is so much competition between mums now and I find social media is so unhelpful at showing the reality of life with a baby. People seem to be so quick to comment and judge without thinking of the consequences. Having said that, I do also think some people genuinely mean well but it comes across badly, probably due to the brain fog and sleep deprivation. Is there a possibility that these mums are just trying to make conversation? It’s really tricky to make new mum friends and quite often I start a conversation by saying something about their baby’s outfit or appearance as that’s all I’ve got to go on. I wouldn’t ever comment on weight though tbh!

Maternity leave is lonely, especially when the excitement of a new baby settles down. I’ve also found it to be quite isolating at times but I’ve been surprised by how willing other mums are to meet up or go for a coffee after a baby class, even if I’ve only met them once or twice before. I’m quite a reserved and quiet person too so reaching out wasn’t in my comfort zone at all but I figured someone had to be brave enough to make the first move.

Flora0112 · 10/04/2025 16:27

Thanks! Yes pampers and Tesco have both been fine over night. I just need to decide which ones we go for as think OH would rather cheaper option as he saw £38 for 244 nappies on amazon for pampers and worked out equalivelent is £10 for trscos 🤣 it's like the heating all over again haha.
She is a good sleeper I can't complain it's just not like her to wake up crying at 4am and be wet but today's problem is a bad reaction to the rotovirus vaccine so the nappies are really getting tested!!

Yes I think it's just been getting me down the comments as kts from people with small babies and noone else in classes seem to have them with rolls then people without kids from my work said she was big and my yoga teacher said she feels like a 5 month old. It doesn't help that DD is more on the advanced side of 3 months and tracks everything, has very good head control and tries to roll so when I say she's only 12 weeks it always like really she's so big or one mum said are you sure mine couldn't lift head at 3 months. I've always been a self conscious person so I just worry now about my DD and what people say about her haha. I know she's fine cause HV said but yeah had a wobble and a shit week this week with her being sick, wet nappies, friend being a bit shit and the nursery we'd booked fees going up and thinking how the fudge are you meant to afford it! I live in Wales so we get no free hours until they are 3 and she'll be goingnursery 5 days a week and new fees mean £1700 q montb so I had a breakdown over how we meant to pay for everything and I go down to half pay this month and haven't had a haircut in a year, my boobs are down my knees and need new bras, due to the HG sickness and pregnancy diabetes I lost 3 stone and have no clothes to fit and it was fie before this nice weather. Basically alot in my head this week so thank you all! Xx

People suck! My son was meant to be big but arrived as 5lb8 and lost weight because of the pressure to breast feed the medication I was on basically stopped my boobs growing and milk production he went down to 5lb 4 and it was terrifying, the midwife I saw at his sign off was awful I ended up with blood pressure because of her attitude. Some babies are chunky others are not my brothers wife had an 8lb12 baby 2 months after me he is huge.
