Laying down to play with cars

I’m a bit worried about my 16 month old son. He spends quite alot of his days laying down on the floor pushing his cars along. I’ve not seen another toddler do this before. I can distract him out of it to play with something else for a bit.. but his default is always back to laying down with his cars. He’s always enjoyed wheels and spinning things since he was little. He makes good eye contact, responds to his name, points, claps etc but isn’t really talking yet or saying any words, just babbling. He is a very cautious child and observed alot before getting involved, he doesn’t really enjoy playing on swings yet. At a playgroup he will only play with cars. I’ve googled the laying down thing and it suggests ASD. Has anyone had anything similar?

Completely normal in my experience!

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 04/04/2025 19:17

Both my grandsons did that. They loved to put their cars in a line and lay on the carpet. Dgs2 also does it with my shoes! He enjoys making a show shop. Neither of the boys are ND. So stop worrying

Literally every little boy I've ever known has done this. Pretty normal

Boys…

welcome to the club 🚗 🛻 🚒

I have 2 neurotypical sons - both were exactly like this and still love cars now even though they’re way past the toddler stage! Better get used to it - this phase can last years 🤣

LittleGreenDragons · 04/04/2025 19:34

How else are you supposed to play with cars? 😮 It can be very uncomfortable being bent over after a few minutes, squished tummy, hurty back, neck cramps. Lying on floors is very comfortable when you are young.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 04/04/2025 19:43

Sounds absolutely normal.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 04/04/2025 19:44

Why do you want to distract him?

He's having fun, bless him.

Jackiebrambles · 04/04/2025 19:45

Get him one of those rugs that has a road on it so he can run the cars along it! Totally normal.

flowerlover1990 · 04/04/2025 19:46

Thank you everyone. I already feel so reassured by you all 😌

My DB did this , so did I we are both NT . My DB loved cars all his life and was a professional mechanic for many many yrs.
Your DS is doing what all kids do .

Hteng · 04/04/2025 19:47

My boy did this a lot when younger as well, according to my mum I did the same with cars, trucks and tractors, in fact all thata changed in the 40 years is the trucks and tractors have gotten bigger.

Lottapianos · 04/04/2025 19:49

Virtually all little children who play with cars lie down on the floor with them. You should lie down too and join in! Follow his lead, join in with what he's doing and comment on what you're doing using 1-2 word phrases so he's hearing the language that goes along with his play. Don't ask questions, and don't ask him to copy you. He sounds sorry, have fun!

I didnt swipe my DMs taylors chalk to do this, nope it wasn't me , not never 😀

FriendsDrinkBook · 04/04/2025 19:52

Both of my boys did this , one asd , one not.

Do make a note of any concerns you have (with dates) , but try not to worry. Enjoy your little boy and talk to him plenty about his interest in cars.

Likewise. Sometimes he'd lay out out his toy cars as if they were a herd, grazing. He's 26 now, NT.

crumblingschools · 04/04/2025 19:55

My DS did this. For years we had a racetrack round our lounge carpet (DH would sometimes join in too!)

DS is now at university studying car design

Fleamaker · 04/04/2025 19:56

My sons both did this, to get a better view of the wheels turning. They liked watching the movement, maybe your son's doing the same?

Lottapianos · 04/04/2025 19:56

'He sounds sorry, have fun!'

Meant to say he sounds ADORABLE! 🤦🏻‍♂️ Stupid phone

Lying on your tummy with cars and ‘doing the brummmms’ as our boys say is the best fun! Make obstacle courses and bridges with blocks, and talk about the colours, do cardboard ramps off the coffee table and on a hot day chalk roads outside. Have fun.

My little brother did this til he was about 14! And he is completely normal!

Absolutely nothing to worry about.

I'm not sure you meant to offend , but please be careful with your language. Using the word normal to describe someone without autism isn't the right thing to do.
