2 year old broken arm

Hello. My 2.5 year old (3 in July) broke her arm last sunday whilst playing at the farm. It was a complete shock and as parents, are riddled with guilt and heartache that we weren't vigilant enough while she was playing. We took her to A&E immediately where x-ray showed greenstick fracture of radius. Dr seemed to think it would heal nicely and fast and wasn't too worried (he said around 3 weeks should be enough). Since we got home it has been tough with her in a cast. She is miserable as her function is reduced and she is snapping at us at everything. We have given her regular painkillers but now we are on day 6 and she is so challenging to please. Me and my husband feel helpless and overwhelmed. Juggling work responsibilities, sending her to nursery (feel guilty for this, but we have no choice or any family help) and home tasks, I am exhausted. Has anyone been in a similar situation? How long did their little one take to heal. I feel like I am going to be counting down the days at this point, and figuring out how we will cope.

Yes, only my youngest dc has ever broken a bone (she was 2 and now she's 17). The other 3 never have, probably I was more distracted!

Have you ever broken your arm ? Or any bone for that matter ?

Perhaps you need to think about how she feels.

I think you need to shift your thinking, being ‘riddled with guilt and heartache’ over a normal childhood accident is odd.

No it’s not odd. It’s a normal maternal reaction

I fractured my elbow a few years ago. It was a minor fracture and healed well. But I was fucking grumpy for a while as it impacted my day to day activities. And im
in my 50’s and relatively able to manage my emotions

on a different note we had 3 boys. I cannot begin to list the accidents they’ve had. And they weren’t even sporty so none of them were sports injuries!

My daughter recently broke her wrist too, it took about 4 weeks to heal. While she adapted to the cast well, she wasn't herself. She would get upset very easily and she was generally just sad more often. As soon as it came off she was back to her old self again. Just be patient with her, she just needs that extra support at the moment x

When my 2 year old broke his leg the only real issue was he wanted to go swimming and play in the bath. He was a real water baby. I think they have waterproof covers now but 50 years ago it was six weeks with no immersion in water. I can still hear the plaintive "bath now mummy" and my reply of " no, bath later.". It's tough but you get through it.

Our 5 year old broke her arm last week. Riddled with guilt and heartache is not how we feel 🤣 both full time working parents with no grandparents around. Chill

My daughter woke up with a broken leg, green stick fracture. We have no idea how it happened. I didn’t notice and sent her to nursery with a broken leg. THAT’S mum guilt!

kalokagathos · 07/06/2025 09:44

It will take 3 weeks

Oh I didn't notice for hours, was so upset at the hospital and felt so guilty. Doctor was very relaxed about it and said one of his colleagues had his child hobbling round on a broken leg for two days before he had it x-rayed and discovered she wasn't making a fuss about nothing but had a broken leg.

We all get it wrong sometimes.

Check with insurance first before cancelling. If hospital say fit to fly you won't get money back. Also.they may only pay out for 1 adult and child as there is nothing stopping the other two going.

Having had a child with 3 seperate breaks I’m surprised she is still in pain. If you suspect she is still in pain then she needs to be seen again.
