Does this sound like ADHD ??

My son is 7 . Lately I’ve been wondering if a lot of his behaviour is ADHD related . Basically I’ve never really thought about as the school always say he’s great , works well , mixes well etc no issues . Anyway he is extremely hard work and exhausting at home . I always thought he would outgrow this phase but now I’m not so sure . He’s very bright . Talks constantly and I mean doesn not stop on and on and on . Has EXTREMELY hightened emotions… always screaming , crying etc etc … the constant screaming all day if the smallest thing bugs him or annoys him , even tho I keep reminding him over and over to take a different approach with his frustration etc and talk about how something annoys him yet he can’t convey it that way . He has toilet isssues ( encopresis) forgets to go toilet before it’s too late etc . Won’t sleep until midnight .. up and down the stairs all night over and over . Very very high needs and highly strung . Since the school havnt said anything I’m not sure what to do as wouldn’t I need them to help with referral ? Or does this not sound typical? Just my other boys were never like this granted everyone is different but I’m finding his behaviour really really difficult

Speak to the school and describe what you've written here. Also speak to your GP and get the ball rolling. It sounds like he's masking at school and then once he gets home he releasing his tension if you see what I mean. My son has autism and is similar in some ways but I'm not saying your son has autism (I'm not a professional whatsover) it's just some of the emotional aspects you describe that I can relate to regarding my DS.
Does he enjoy getting out in the fresh air ? I find time outdoors works wonders and tires him out a bit so he sleeps better.

I have experience of both and it sounds more autistic than ADHD to me, but you need a proper professional evaluation, so I'd get that ball rolling. It may be something entirely different too.

From your description it could equally be ASD. I’m not a professional and even they couldn’t say from a few words on MN.

Ask for a meeting with SENCo and class teacher to discuss your concerns. They may or not have concerns but should be able to referals into place to assess his learning needs, this isn’t the same as diagnosis. Schools should but don’t always put into place adjustments based on need rather than diagnosis.

Then go to GP, the wait for assessment can be 5 years plus in some areas. Read up about right to choose.

Look closely, what makes things easier for him outside, bike riding, swimming, ‘heavy work’ is great for helping all children regulate. What makes things more difficult for him?

Is he getting suport with his encopresis from NHS team or school nurse?

My son displayed similar behaviours and was also more or less fine at school. He's now diagnosed ADHD and ASD. Definitely worth getting a referral. But be prepared for a long wait...

….or save up for a private assessment if you can afford it.

My DS is diagnosed with both ADHD and ASD. He struggles with emotional dysregulation and sleep issues in a similar way to how you describe. It’s difficult to untangle the behaviours and attatch them to one diagnosis or the other. We are waiting on CAHMS to prescribe medication for ADHD to see if that makes a difference. Melatonin helps with the sleep issues. I buy them on a private prescription online and use them several times a week
